Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Storing. Photocopies of Documents

I have a database file of my family
How can I store the photocopies of members documents on A5

    #2
One approach would involve scanning your documents to JPG image files. Then store them in one or more folders on disk. Then use an Image_file_reference field in your A5 table to link to each one. Each image file should have a unique name and path.

You have 3 easily available options for Images.
The field characteristics you use will dictate which search path is used when adding images.

PNG Image will initially open only a search for .png image types. You cannot change the selection type and upload a .jpeg from here.

JPeg Image will initially search for .jpeg but will allow you to upload .jpg and .png also.

Image File Reference is simply a link to the location of the image, however it defaults to .jpg initially.

To avoid errors with images, I would suggest that the Image File Reference is the better option. If you wish to make an application which you distribute within the family and need to access the images from several locations, you might consider using Dropbox or Google Drive to store the images you wish to share.
ALWAYS keep a local backup though.

I would never use the Image File Reference. Never!! This is a field that does not have a literal value that can be changed or edited. If at any time the image file that the field is pointed to needs to be moved, the link is broken and the re-connection is a manual one-at-a-time re-pointing. It cannot be done with code because there is no value in the field. I will put together an example of what I recommend in the morning.

Here is an example of how to have files saved and the file names in a table and not using image file reference.

              Nice try Mike, but;
"If you wish to make an application which you distribute within the family and need to access the images from several locations, you might consider using Dropbox or Google Drive to store the images you wish to share."

I understand why you are opposed to IFR, however it's there for a reason.
I did a lot of work with Images for a US Licensing operation, and the one thing which was paramount was consistency, both naming convention and image location.

Without going into too much detail, each image was displayed IF it existed for the item concerned.

              Say you wanted a Receipt.
There was a Receipts folder on a server.
The Receipt was named using the item code.
The search string was server/item code(created locally)/image extension type.
On opening the images Form, IF a respective image of a receipt existed it was displayed - remember there are 11 different images to contend with.
As long as the naming convention was adhered to, location was irrelevant.

So it all depends whether 'L' wants local or with remote capability. (I have a Web app which is used to record Asset Images and data which is much easier to manage using a DT, 'phone or tablet)

What you demonstrated is a simple local application, which is fine for a single user or a single PC on the same LAN and it works.

Unfortunately your example has a bug when trying to add a record, which 'L' will find confusing. Not criticising, just saying.

              command: parentform:img1.bitmap.filename = vs_now
              Bad parameter passed to function

                Hi Ted,

There is a HUGE difference between Dropbox and Google Drive. Dropbox has local folders and files that are populated through a synching events to maintain the local files constant with the cloud files. It operates in an acceptable fashion. Google Drive is really, an exclusively a cloud storage repository. There is no capability to access a "file" that is in Google Drive from a desktop application. Google has a supposed system like Dropbox but it works .... pardon my grammer... for shit! The Google exchange to local files is a major dog and isn't workable.

I understand why you are opposed to IFR, however it's there for a reason.
Yes. Have you ever used IFR and then moved an application to a different location. All the IFR data are literal and if you move them, the links do not update. You have to update them all one-at-a-time.

I downloaded the example app I uploaded into several computers and ran the tiny app. I don't see the problem you are suggesting.

Chiming in, I would definitely agree with Mike on Dropbox. I've also had good success with OneDrive which works in the same manner as Dropbox. It does not limit your use to 3 computers for the free version as Dropbox does and gives you more free storage, but if I didn't need it for more than 3 computers I would choose Dropbox, but that's my preference. You should try both, but as Mike so eloquently put it, I would steer clear of Google drive for now. The only thing I know about IFR is that it's infrared. Oh' wait that's image file reference, sorry!

                    Mike, I understand.
                    The error is this;

                    PM regarding Ira.

                      Hi Ted,
The Message Board strikes again... What you attached to show the error has no image present or a file that can be opened. Who was it on this Message Board that had their saying in their signature as "A bigger and better system that doesn't work usually comes from a smaller system that did work" ? And, oh yes, the signature has been totally screwed up too.

In actual fact I am more confused about my question than when I asked.
                        My questions are
                        1. How can I store 2 and more documents of each of my family members on A5v12 without mixup?
                        2. Can I use our server for the exercise?

                          Few questions;
                          1) What do you mean by a "server". Is this a true server or another PC operating as a host for Alpha, which is accessed by people on the same LAN connecting to it?
                          2) Do you have much experience of Primary Keys?
                          3) What document types are you storing? It makes a difference.

Anyway, look at this. It's simple, uses Memo Field to store document content, but not images.
