Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RDS / Terminal Server

My IT support are setting this up & tell me that this works by using shared resources, so all users would open the Same Alpha Runtime program & the same shadowed db.
    Does this work ?
I am at the early stages of this so just trying to see if this is workable before we get too far with it. Also if it does work any advice on set up.
    Thanks
    Terry

    Yes, it works fine.

Basically, several users remote log into a single server with each getting his / her own desktop.

A new setup allows 120 days of trial before your IT guys need to buy licenses.

At some point prior to the 120th day, the IT guys will install license packs purchased in groups of 5, so if you have 10 users logged into that single server, the 11th person cannot log in.

Once you (or they) install the Alpha Runtime, they will need to designate who has access to run that software with their session. (Obviously, the development version is limited to the number of licenses you bought from Alpha Software...)

An IT guy where we are installing a DB said T/S is no longer tied to concurrent users, but to either users or workstations - I'm not sure which.
That said, T/S works really well; I have used it for many years.

There was a good thread just a short time ago about TS that was very important. It related to speed and resources and set up (shadowed or not). What I remember the thread introducing to the understanding of how Alpha operates is that no matter how big and bold the server machine is, the Alpha code is written in a way that will only be processed through a single core of the machines processors, and speed improvements by having multiple processor cores isn't attainable. That is what I remember. Maybe someone can find that thread because I cannot work this new Message Board at all.

I recall reading that Lenny at Alpha had said that although Alpha has code for using multiple processors, it doesn't work and Alpha uses only 1 core
T/S works well. I have heard that when the number of concurrent users reaches a certain point, it slows down, but I have never experienced it myself. I suspect the amount of memory and processor speed are critical.

              Hi Martin,
Glad you are still with us. Are your set ups running users as shadowed runtimes?

I can't see any need to run shadowed if the users are TSing onto the server. All data is local to the app, so if anything shadowed would impact performance negatively.

We use TSPlus running A5V11 on virtual servers Windows 2012R2 and have no problems in day to day running up to just under 50 users connected. We do see problems with sessions dropping, but not logging out if the user count exceeds 50 - this can end with the server having to be rebooted to flush out the stuck sessions.

Note: Each user gets their own instance of A5 which will be allocated a CPU by WIndows when it starts, so users are balanced across the servers available CPUs, not all on the same one.

If users are TSing onto another physical/logical device other that the server where the data is stored, then shadowing would/might be appropriate.

                      Hi Martin
Do you have any special set up for you T/S such as an auto exec script.
having issues getting this to work, when 3/4 users connected its working but when all users 25 app Alpha just does not run properly
                      Thanks

T/S, from Microsoft: When I started using it, I paid 800.00 for it, and that included 5 seats. Additional seats were purchased in lots of five, at 80.00 per seat.
How it works: if you have ever used any remote program (even Microsoft's), like PCAnywhere, Logmein, etc, It will be familiar. The user clicks an icon on their own workstation that automatically connects them with company's server, where the program is. The server may be in the same room as the user or it may be 1,000 miles away. It may or may not require the user to enter a windows password, and it may or may not require a password for opening the Alpha program. It may or may not be setup to automatically log on to the server and automatically open the program. Please note that I haven't added any new customers in several years, and I have heard that costs have changed, and that each seat is now tied to a particular workstation, which was not the case when I purchased it.

Its similar to using a shadowed data base in the sense that each user has their own workspace, e.g. global variables are those of the user, only.
It is very fast and sends keystrokes from the user to the program, and screen refreshes from the program back to the user.

You will need an IT person to set it up and help teach you how each user creates a shortcut on their desktop to open it.

The TS i am trying to set up / my IT network guys are trying to set up is AWS, which works fine up to about 3 or 4 users but starts becoming slow / unresponsive or failing to run Alpha as the users grow.
Users are on Runtime with a shadowed folder, pointing to the data also on the AWS (separate server)

Does anyone out there have a working solution of TS/RDS in AWS for Alpha.

                          Thanks

I have had up to 20 users on concurrently, with no issue. With T/S one usually would NOT use a shadowed database.
As for performance, the speed of the broadband and the broadband of the user are critical. I have 400 down and 50 up withy the option for 1000 down and 50 up.
Normally one can get a fairly fast broadband.
Also, the speed of the server and the amount of memory is critical. I would recommend maybe 10 gig per user, depending on the size of the app.
