Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    PDF reports problem

I have a large application written in A5v10.5 residing entirely on a server accessed via RDP from user computers. It's been a champion. However yesterday the capabilities of making any PDF reports resulted in a complete freezing of the application open on the print dialog (image below). It required a Task Manager end session action to release the frozen app. A PDF file was initiated at 0 KB which could not be deleted until a complete log off the server occurred.

    printlock.JPG
I opened the app in Alpha v11 and was able to generate PDF reports. I noticed the printer used with v11 was AlphaFivePrinterv4p5. I deleted the AlphaFivePrinterv4 from control panel and tried again opening in v10.5 and tried making report. The AlphaFivePrinterv4 returned, and instead of the app freezing on making a report, the generation of a report initiates, a file is made with 1 KB of data, and then an error generates (image below) which says the file is open under another application without completely freezing up the app.

    PDF_issue.JPG

In the background is the Adobe Reader menu. The file size here reads 16KB. In file explorer it is 1KB. Trying to delete the 1KB file while app open is not possible with error that file is being used by another application. Closing out of the Alpha app does not release the file, again it requires a complete log off the server to release the file so it can be deleted. There are two Alpha printers installed, AlphaFivePrinterv4 and AlphaFivePrinterv4p5. The one used using v11 is AlphaFivePrinterv4p5. All the Report Properties have Printer set to "use default printer". Changing the default printer in Control Panel doesn't change outcome. Assigning the printer in A5 Report Properties to a specific, not default printer, doesn't change the outcome.

    So, two questions -
    1. Any ideas how to proceed to correct this problem? This a huge app that's been running very well, and I'm hesitant to do an entire migrating to newer version?
    2. Where is Alpha drawing the list of printers it lists in the Report Printer properties? I know to look in registry @ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Windows NT > Current Version > Print > Printers for a printer list, but the list in the A5 Report Properties is not this.

    Thank you.

Mike. have you tried reinstalling the AMYUNI print drivers? As I recall, there's an exe somewhere within the Alpha Program files that will let you do that.

        Hi Guys,
Thanks for responding. I found the AMYUNI installed and ran it. It installed a printer AmyUni Document Converter. It did not help. I don't have any references listed "down" like used to exist on the old MB.

It would be very helpful if when creating a post, one would mention the build they are using.
I do not know if this applies to your situation.

In the latest build, 7279 the release notes say:

PDF Reports -The default manner for creating PDF reports has changed. Previously PDF reports were created using the Amyuni printer driver. Now, the Amyuni printer driver is no longer.
For desktop applications you can control whether PDF reports should still use the Amyuni printer driver by going to the View, Settings menu option and then in the Preferences section set the option for PDF to Yes. The default setting is No (meaning do not use the Amyuni printer driver).

Known issues with new method of generating PDF Reports

For reports that use non-latin character sets (e.g. CJK or Hebrew), you may need to changed the font used in the report.

How to report PDF reporting issues to Alpha Software

If your report does not render correctly when printed as a PDF, right click on the report in the Web Project Control Panel and select the Create Bug Report menu option under the Datasources menu. Select a location to store the .zip file and be sure to check the Include Raw Pages option. Send the zip file to [email protected].

            Update,
I got it back to a working condition, although not an Ideal way, i don't think. I had a second full A5 installed on another drive, so I copied all the files in Alpha folder of the bad copy to another folder, deleted all the files in the Alpha folder, and copied the second full install to the original Alpha folder. Nerve wracking but it worked.

I don't know if this is anything to do with your issue, Mike, but I have a gvmnt app which occasionally refuses to display a calculated field.
It works fine until I get a windows update, then I have to run the Compact and all is well again. It's written in V11.5
