Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Server related issue

    I think this is a server related issue. It began after moving my app to a new server environment. The following code, for updating my app, is run from the autoexec file. It worked in my previous hosted environment, but not this one.

    Now it will work if run from my desktop when I'm logged onto the server that hosts my app. But it won't run when someone is just logging directly into my app from their local desktop.

    Code:
    dim vTarget as C
    dim vSource as C

    vSource = "\\mm01-sf-02\PALSDB$\restore"
    ui_msg_box("vSource",vSource)

    vTarget = a5.get_path()
    ui_msg_box("vTarget",a5.get_Path())

    PleaseWait(.T.,"Data Processing - Installing PALs Update")
    dim success as L
    success =Copy_folder(vSource,vTarget,.T.)
    WAIT_UNTIL(Success)
    PleaseWait()

    ui_msg_box("Done","Process Complete")

    END
    Any ideas?

    What do you mean by not working? Error?

      Hi Stan,

      It doesn't copy the files from the Source to the Target.

      I moved the code from the autoexec and put it on a button on my main menu to diagnoses line by line.

      It appears to run - fills the message box with the appropriate file names and location and the PleaseWait dialog appears and disappears - but the files don't copy/move.

        You have the Only_Copy_If_Newer flag set. Is it possible that the date/time on the server is wrong and copy_folder thinks the server directory is older?

          I removed the .T. and still it doesn't work when I log in from my local desktop. But when I open my app from my desktop on the server, it works as it should. But, when opening from the local desktop, the message box gives the correct file name. Let me add a File.exist to see if it actually sees the file location.

          Got to run out, but will be back soon.

            Re: Server related issue

            I couldn't wait to find out. Yes - the file exists when I log in from my local desktop. So it sees the the source file, and even with the .T. removed, it doesn't copy files when run from my local computer.

              Next step, will it copy it somewhere else?

                Re: Server related issue

                It will not copy it to another folder.

                Again, it will when I run it from the desktop on the server, but not when I log in from my local desktop, like my users.

                I'd think it was a permission issue, but it does tell me that the File.exists - so it can see the file.

                Hhmmmm....

                  More information:

                  After logging in from my local desktop, I am able to manually open Windows explorer: navigate to: \\mm01-sf-02\PALSDB$\restore - and copy and paste files.

                  Am I missing something obvious? I just tried it using the runtime from the server's desktop and it runs without a problem.

                    Re: Server related issue

                    There is also a file.copy_folder() method - have you tried that?

                      Robin - thanks for the suggestion, but that doesn't work either. Seems like the copy function just cannot "grab" the files, although it can "see" them.

                      Is there a way to "grab" them one-by-one?

                        Isn't copy_folder() a fancy wrapper for dir_create_recurse(), filefind_get(), and file_copy()?

                          Re: Server related issue

                          Problem solved. I changed my approach to using the folder where the runtime resides. Hope my hosting friends don't tell me Monday that there is some reason why I can't use this drive/folder.

                          Thanks for thinking about this.
