Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Does Desktop Need A Internet Connection

    Hello
I visited a prospect the other day to do a presentation of our AA application.

I was using the Run Time.

I couldn't fire the app up from the desktop icon without getting an internet connection.

    Is this the case now?

Thanks you for your help. It is much appreciated.

    Kind regards

    Alex

Alex, to the best of my knowledge one does not need to have an internet connection for either the Developer or the Runtime.
Many times I run either from my notebook computer with out any internet.
There is a setting in the preferences, Internet, Background Internet Access. This runs on startup. One can turn this off.
Maybe someone else will have a better answer.

      Couple of questions, Alex.
When you are back at base and your WiFi on the laptop is turned off, do you still have issues?
Dt or RT should not depend on I/net, so with the WiFi off, can you run other none I/net dependent apps?

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

AA will need internet access every now & again to check the license, but apart from that I think it should run connection free.

            Hello Ted
            I switched the internet off.

Restarted machine, clicked on desktop icon and got a warning about license.

            Switched the machine off.
            Reconnected to the Internet
            Application fires up as should.

This will be an issue when demonstrating on site to larger prospects where the IT department might not give access to a connection.
Over the years I have had a number of issues where demos I have sent out either on CD or USB sticks have not been allowed to run
            on the users workstations.

            Any way around this Alpha?

            Many thanks

            Alex

Alex, the error that you posted (which I have removed to protect private information) is a message that would only come from a much older release of Alpha Anywhere. If you update to a newer build, you will not have this issue when running with no Internet connection.

                  Hi Alex,
Don't know what your application is but it really doesn't have any functionality that involves the internet? Regardless, I use my cell phone hotspot to connect to the internet almost anywhere, mostly when I'm a passenger in a car. You might resort to that.

                    Hello Lenny
Thanks for your input and help.

                    Mike
Thanks for your suggestion but I travel throughout the UK doing presentations and visiting clients. I don't think hanging off my mobile is viable.
Ronald pointed me in the right direction and that works.

Thanks to both of you for your help.

                    Kind regards

                      Hi Alex,
Glad to hear you got this worked out. I travel throughout the United States to grocery stores, many of the times into very rural areas, and I'm linked to the internet with my cell phone hotspot with rarely a problem. It's a little slower than being in the office with fiber connection but the cell hotspot connection works pretty darn well here, but maybe the cell coverage in the UK is not as robust.

Mike, the coverage for 4G and 5G in the UK means we don't really need off line mobile comms nowadays.
I piggback my connections when out in the Motor Home (RV)
Saves a ton of development time.

So I got up at the crack of dawn, drove 200+ miles invited into the prospects boardroom, setup my notebook and yes. when I clicked the desktop icon to launch our application, up came the License Warning dialogue message.
OK, they were a big company and had no problem giving me a wifi connection...but I cannot always rely on such accommodation.

Can someone from Alpha state one way or another that you need a web connection when using the runtime?

                          Thanks.

You do NOT need an Internet connection.

You DO need a newer version of your runtime in order do recognize that it can run without an Internet connection.
