Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Get File in Folder

I need to open file explorer and restrict user to one folder or below. Like ui_get_file() - but limited to one directory or folder.

    Suggestions?

    Hi Tom
You can build your own with tree control in a dialog building the folders dynamically, setting those you want able to be accessed. I have this in several places. There is a limit to the number of "below" folders that can be presented and accessed. The limit, if i remember correctly, is 6 folders deep.

      Mile,

I think you steered me in the right direction. I haven't used Tree Controls before. I just took a look and I'm lost! Any sample code would be most welcome.

      Thanks ~ Tom

OK. I created a Tree Control (or the Geni did).

So I can limit the folders, but, when I pass the folder onto ui_get_file() I can then navigate away from this folder.

How can I dynamically fill the folder with the files beneath it?

Now I'm thing I can just use FileFind.get(). However I'm having a problem selecting one file.

            Hi Tom,
Maybe this might give a bit of help. You can code into it folders that are not allowed and to not show. This works well unless you have many, many folders and subfolders and files. I can only use this in our system with the starting folder being deep into our folder tree because we have so many levels and files. Used with the starting folder being shallow, it take forever, and usually gags. If this isn't going to work for your needs, there is a different strategy that begins with one dialog with a tree of superficial folders only, no files, and this dialog called when the deep folder chosen.

Not sure if you want to go this route, but why not use filefind, dump the results into a table, then use a grid/view box/list as the method
for the end user to select a file ?

Mike's solution is soooooo close. I'd have one small (I hope) request of Mike. What needs to change to show the folders before the files. Currently the files come first, then the folders at the bottom.

                            Hi Tom,
Look again. In my hands I call: ursa_file_select("e:\scans") and the top folder is 'Scans" with the files in Scans showing and below are all the subfolder in Scans unexpanded with + node to expand the subfolders. I had to build in a placeholder to be the file in focus/selected to stop the dialog from closing with the functionality of the dialog closing when a file is selected.

See attached. The folders come after the files. Can we have the folders come first? ~ TomSelect File.png
