Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    alpha query question

    I have a form that is opened, with the form set to filter on one parent, and the child (embedded browse) filtered on paid=.f.
    The first time it opens, after closing the program and reopenig it, it takes a long time to open - BUT after that it opens almost instantly.

    I am thinking that Alpha is using a $$$ query it makes to open it a second time - how would I find Alpha's query, if that is the case?

    Re: alpha query question

    Martin,

    I have noticed that simply opening the default browse for a table that hasn't been opened in a form or browse for some time causes Alpha (V11) to perform some internal processing and display the progress bar before the layout will open.

    I just experimented with a table I know to be slow opening at times. Before opening the browse I issued

    tbl = table.open("cost")
    tbl.QUERY_DETACH_ALL()
    tbl.close()

    from the interactive.

    Didn't seem to make a difference, still slow. Closing and reopening the browse was nearly instantaneous.
    Completely deleting the registry INDX and Table keys didn't help either.

    Maybe Alpha's checking the indexes?

      Same issue here and longer when on a runtime over network.
      It seems it does run through the indexes on first open.

      That did not seem to be as slow with v7-v8 on winXP as it is with v11 up and win7-win8

      If anybody comes up with a way around this, I would be super interested.

        Re: alpha query question

        I checked a large table without any indexes and the opening was still slow. ~200,000 records and I saw the progress bar. Maybe it's the record number index being updated but packing before opening a layout doesn't help.

          I have one that is 950,000 records and it is probably a lot slower and Yes it probably is as Stan thinks although I get several since I have several indexes.

            this is my last 4.5 customer (since about 2000)
            on 4.5 and xp was not an issue, but on v12 and w7 it is.
            Since it only occurs the first time, I'm betting Alpha made a temporary query - if may be a flatenquery
            I i could see it it I might be able to use it!

              Re: alpha query question

              Well .... I came up with an acceptable solution. In my case, on a form, there is a parent and related children in an embedded browse - like an invoice. The entire child table only has maybe 8500 records. The child table is filtered on the parent, of course, but also on paid=.f.

              The behavior was that after opening the app, and opening that form, the first time it opened took an unacceptable length of time. But the second and subsequent openings were almost instant. I got Finian Lennon involved, and we tried everything - flattenquerry, different indexes, etc. - to no avail.

              So ... to the tale, I duplicated the child table with a different name, created a set for it, copied the form to the new set, created an append to only copy records where paid=.f. and the contractid's matched. Wallah!! It works like a charm, although I had to change a lot of code when writing the records.

                  Did you try an xdialog embedded browse? I wonder if that would have made a difference...

                    I'm not that good at creating complicated xdialogs. And since it now runs almost instantly every time, including after closing and reopening the app, I put it to bed. The app was originally put together in 4.03 in maybe 1999 or 2000. And since I have not had this issue before, even where there are forms with embedded browses with maybe 20,000 or so records (in other apps), it may be related to something lingering from 4.03.

                      I suppose it might depend on what you want to do once the records are displayed...get a total perhaps? The Report preview supercontrol is also handy for that. And you can add links to a field to view another report or form - just like a double click on a browse.
