Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Windows Screen Sizing

I had an issue regarding the proper setup of my licensing at A5 for the past 2 years. That has been resolved. Thanks Ian. But now, after updating to the latest I notice that the size of my view in Windows is too small on the initial screen. It corrects itself after opening a couple of windows. When I return to the initial screen afterward, the sizing is OK. Anyone else experience this? If so, how can this be resolved?

    Thanks,

    Gene

PS It's good to be back!

I found a way around this though I do not understand why I would have to. I added an xbasic command to "resize" the first few windows to their originally defined size as an on init function.
The command is sys_id_resize("window name", X dimension, Y dimension).

I would try submitting a bug report. They may have an answer.

        Thanks Ron.

The resizing thing did not work either on an initial start. What does work is to open the first screen then closing the first screen then opening another screen then closing the other screen and going back to opening the original screen. I did this all from the startup routine before the user is even aware of what is happening. I agree, this has to be a bug!

If it is a bug, then almost certainly all users with the same build will have the same issue - try running the patch for the build you are using

I upgraded from 7751, build 5587 SEVERAL TIMES and each time I do, the window sizing bug goes away until I start again. Then it returns and still says I am running 7751-5587. After the upgrade, I looked at the About and saw version 7756-5588 was running. Still, it did not stick around for long. Anyone else seeing this?

Light dawns on marble head! Today's default directory is not the same as it was some years ago. The update was done in Alpha Anywhere\... whereas I have been running in \A5V12... It's amazing what updating my shortcut can do! :-)

Have a good laugh on me gang!

An update: The bug DOES remain. If you were to open an Alpha application with a small window then close it and open another Alpha application that has a larger window, the most recent application will open with a window of the previously closed small window application. It appears that the window size data is written somewhere and the assumption is taken that the current application uses the same window size. This is a mistake.

Question: What xbasic command can be entered into the Autoexec file to force an Alpha Anywhere application to load up with the appropriate window sizing?

                Thanks,

                Gene

For those following this, I did submit a bug report yesterday. In the meantime, I went back to using A5V12.

Just to let those that are following this know, the sizing bug is still there. It appears that the latest pays no attention to the form/window size information. Could it be that the desktop is being treated like a mobile device?

                      Gene,
You stated you went back to A5V12. Alpha Anywhere is A5V12. What build are you running in A5V12? Shortly after build 4269, Alpha changed to a new version of .net. This required re-writes of the internal code and introduced many bugs. I submitted many bug reports myself. For my older desktop apps, I still use build 4269 with no issues.

                        Thanks Ron.

I am currently on build 7776. I find that the only way the window sizing remains OK is if I run my application in full screen mode. Short of doing that, the need to resize the windows remains constant at startup and occasionally during the day as well. It seems to me, like I noted before, that the boys down the road no longer pay attention to the form size settings.

I hope they get this window thing fixed before I have to explain this to my users when they upgrade to my latest.
