Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Child Browse jumps

    I have a set 1:M on a form. Two Browses. Browse1 at the parent level to select record, and another browse2 to select multiple child records.

    Within the browse2 window, it all works well; but when I page up or down to see additional browse2 (child) records, it will jump to a different PARENT (browse1) record. The parent record selected is always the last record.

    Any Ideas?? I have referential Integrity set to NONE on the set.

    Thanks ~ Tom

    Tom,
    When you click on a parent record in the "parent" browse, do all the "Child" records for THAT parent show up? or do all records from the child table show up?

      Re: Child Browse jumps

      Hi Tom,

      Just the records for the Parent record show. But when I "page up" or use the scroll bar to see more (scroll up), it jumps to another parent record (usually the last parent in lastname order. The usual process is to go to the last record, then scroll up or use the page up key on the keyboard.

        Hi Tom,
        I just tested this with one of my own sets (v11) and it worked as expected. Whichever browse was active, the page up or down worked fine - as did the scroll. I made both browses smaller than the data just to see if it made a difference - it didn't. Could it be something with your set link, or browse restrictions or the form filter? If v12 has 'improved' the browse it doesn't seem it would be about this feature.

          v12 appeared to work the same as v11 when I looked.

          If your cursor is in the browse(child), only child records should show up and be scrolled. If you switch to a parent field or parent browse, then the parent record should change.

          Is this not what is happening?

          I have seen others resort to this
          parentform.browse1.Up() using a button on the side of the browse
          parentform.browse1.Down()

          I used this in the menu bar to make sure ONLY the parent record changed by menu bar
          topparent:Resthold.activate()
          topparent.fetch_next()

          This is using xbasic.

            check to see if any of the fields in the browse belong to the parent - that happens sometimes when creating the embedded browse

                Thank you all.

                Grace - it looks like you tested what needed testing. Its when I'm in the child browse and scroll to another page of records that the parent record jumps.

                Dave - its the child browse, an embedded browse, that causes the parent browse to jump.

                Martin - All the fields in the browse belong to the child, but it is a "split-browse" meaning some fields are outside the browse. The browse is on a tabbed form, with another tab show having more browse fields. I use this in other places without a problem.

                I just had a call this morning from another user having this problem. Guess I'll have to redesign the form or process.

                  Re: Child Browse jumps

                  Try creating a new form from scratch - and before having the fields outside the browse try scrolling and see if all is well - and then add the fields outside the browse and try again - the pageup and down and the uparrow and down in an embedded browse should scroll the browse only.

                    A screenshot of the form would help in lieu of the actual tables. Your form is beginning to sound a bit more complex than what you first described.

                      You are right - it is complicated, with form events, Browse1 and Browse2 events, tab events - you name it.

                      But this behavior has just started recently and the form has been in use for years.

                          Not really. I caught the error and offered another form to open based solely on the browse table.

                            Is the Cascade Hotel still there? My daughter was born in Duluth. I was working there after Taconite, all the mining areas north of Duluth all the way to Canada, and then following the lake on the other side, through Wisconsin and into Michigan. Had semi permanent residence at the hotel.
