Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I have tried that, it appears to work but the next time I open the form it has changed back to the pre corrected expression.

Ok.. I have never seen the image you uploaded so it could be an addition to the latest version of AA.

In Form Design Mode, look at the Form/Events and see if the calculation is being set there.
If it works once - and you are saving it - if it's being overwritten when you reopen the Form, the OnInit Event might be causing it.

      Tough decision and your call.
      Back up the app.
Open the Form and hide the calculated field causing the error.
Recreate a new calculated field and insert it.
      See what happens.

You may have issues if the old calc filed is used in reports or elsewhere, or if the app is trying to set it somehow, so you will need to test it.

      Final question.
Where did you get this application?
Did you build it or did you buy it?

I cannot see OnInit Event just Onpush, Onarrive, OnDepart, Onchange etc. When I open them there is nothing there.
You say hide the calculation field, do you mean delete it from the form? It still remains in the DragDrop list.
It is a homemade application started with a very old Alpha program.

If you are comfortable doing the next bit, send me a zipped copy of the app and I will have a more detailed look.
My systems are secure and the data is of no interest but if you are concerned, please anonymise any sensitive stuff.
Depending how the original app - I presume from V4 - has been converted may make a difference.

          [email protected] will get me.

almost seems a screen sharing session would be the most efficient way to get this resolved.

Alan, I've never seen anything like your screenshot in a conventional desktop application. It almost looks like you've loaded calcs from a different workspace, perhaps in a library you load at startup. If this wild guess is right you will probably have to adjust the calcs in the 'other' workspace. Are you doing anything fancy at startup?

I think I have a temporary solution and have altered the test form by recreating the calculation. Sent back to Alan.
The Calculated Fields panel didn't show the External Calculated Fields as a greyed out list originally, but after Compacting, it appeared.
There are probably about 100 calculations - with about 30 being used on the form (might be wrong numbers, but you get the size of things).
No Autioexec and no Library being loaded.
I suspect that the number of Calc Fileds has exceeded the Alpha display capability so the overflow goes on to External Calculated Fields.

                  Hi
Thinking about it would splitting it into different databases help solve the problem?

                    Probably.
You only sent me one Db, not two, so it's worth a try.
