Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Pictures on a cell phone

If I connect a recent Android phone to a Windows 10 computer via USB, I can grant access to the phone and the phone then appears in Windows File Explorer and I can view, copy, delete the files on the phone.

What I would really like to do is to be able to read/grab the picture file listing using Alpha's filefind.get() function but I can't get it to work. The path I am passing to FIleFind.get() is taken from the file explorer window and looks like

    "This PC\Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G\Phone\DCIM\Camera" + Chr(92) + "*.jpg"

but, despite fiddling with many variations of this including inserting the machine name instead of "This PC" I don't get any search results. Does anyone know if it is possible to do this? Or are there other permissions I need to set on the phone or is the Windows Explorer listing some sort of alias that the Alpha function doesn't recognize? Thanks for any ideas or suggestions.

You may get some pointers from https://superuser.com/questions/3699...ine-in-windows but looks like you'll need code ourside of AA or a 3rd party tool.

I've been trying to Bluetooth images into Win10 and keep getting errors.
      Drivers are the issue apparently.
Will investigate more. If you can boot from a phone, pic transfer should be possible.

Thanks Armasoft and Ted. The link to the superuser website was useful - it gave me the acronym I'd been missing in all my searches i.e. MTP for Media Transfer Protocol which determines how/when files can be transferred between devices. In my case, I'm trying to get files from my Android phone which Windows 10 shows in Windows Explorer as soon as the phone is connected via USB. Even though it shows the files on the device in Explorer, and you can use Explorer to copy/delete files, it's not really part of the file system and is not assigned a drive letter.

One lead I got from the Superuser link was to a 3rd party program called MTPDrive which enables the mapping of a Media Device to a drive letter which, if a device is visible in WIndows, allows the files to be accessed and manipulated in something like Powershell. In the Trial version, MTPDrive identifies the device and maps it to a drive. Unfortunately, Alpha's file methods don't all recognize the drive letter. So far, the only Alpha functions that work with the MTPDrive mapping are file.copy() and file.remove(). Trying to get files listings with Filefind.get() and filefind.first() don't return anything and I can't create a watch using file.watch_create().

I went ahead and bought the full version of MTPDrive but I doubt that will change anything as far as Alpha is concerned. I'll give it all another run-through when I get the key for the full version of MTPDrive and will post back - but I'm not optimistic.

I had a look into this today Finian, and it is confusing.
Not tried actually importing using Alpha yet, but MTP is installed automatically when I connect the 'phone.

The earlier images I have on my phone render well on my DT when clicked. The more recent ones display a message that the image format is unsupported (it shows on the 'phonbe) or that it is corrupt.
It may be that the image is just not visible to your machine. You have a much later 'phone model than me.
Have you tried finding a text document and seeing if you can upload that?

I will bash on with the older images and see if I get anywhere.

There is always "Alpha Transform" which could get your images on your DT.

Using MTPDrive I have come up with an approach that has promise. For practical purposes I empty the phone's picture folder. In Alpha, I set a watch on the phone picture folder that runs a function when a picture is taken. The function creates and runs two batch files, one to copy the picture just taken over to the computer, the other to delete the file on the phone. So some of Alpha's file functions do work with the MTPDrive mapping just not the ones that would make all this a lot easier.

All this is required because the installer for our ID scanner is failing on a new Windows 10 machine and the vendor no longer supports that version. So we have to come up with a way to get the driver's license image into our software.

              Finian,
Does it have to be a cell phone capturing the image?

                HI Mike:

No, not necessarily. We thought about using a tablet, but the cell phone was the "simplest" to implement. The primary issue getting the image from the device on to the computer so we can get it into Alpha.

                  Hi Finian,
Sorry, my question was poorly formed. What I should have asked is does it have to be a mobile device taking a picture? In other words, could the image be captures with a scan of the drivers license on a scanner/multi function printer? With these the image goes to a file that a script can access.
