Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Hide Show

    Hoping somebody has ran into this before.
    While in VIEW mode, trying to Hide fields and Show browses. But then if in Change or Edit modes, Hide the browses and Show the fields.

    The attached will do what I'm after, but only works on it's own for change mode. To make F3 or the Pencil icon work you must go into a filed and hit the space bar or start typing to make the record dirty, then it will work.

    Main goal here is, have the field show and browse hide on their own after the F3 or Pencil icon is active.

    The attached was created in the alpha sports customer table and is using conditional objects.

    Hoping this is clear enough and understandable. Any idea's much appreciated.

    Just to be clear.
    2 types of Form. 1 with Fields, 1 with Browses.
    Initial Form is Browse, but on change/enter, you want the Fields form to show?
    On Save, revert to Browse?

    Have I got it right?

    CO's and Form swap are options, so just confirm the above if you would be so kind.

      I think this will do what you want. You have my version of your form and you need to import my custom toolbar that goes with the form. Using Alpha Sports.

        Just a suggestion.
        Not using Alpha Sports, but using advanced events on a browse.

          I made a typo error, the form I originally attached, only works correctly for Enter, not Change! F3 and Pencil edit are the trouble makers.

          Ted and Ron, Thanks so much for your replies! Both are great ideas.
          Ted, your example is great and has tricks I've never seen or thought of. Only thing, the browse doesn't act as a search like super controls dropdown browse, on my machine anyway.
          My goal is to have the browses on top of the fields so we can instantly search, populating with closest match as you type, but then also allow the contents in the fields to be changed or be able to add new records.

          Ron, Your right on it. A bit more involved then was hoping but nothing too complicated either. Only thing, I'll need to make new menu/s but something I need to do anyway before going live. Did you have a HideTest menu bar? It shows in properties under Toolbars, View, but can't find under the code tab.

          Going to experiment more with your idea's.
          Wonder if there's a simple way to make the record dirty so when either F3, or Pencil icon is pressed, they make the record active with out having to enter into a field and hitting the space bar or a key to make active?

          Thanks again!

            You are going to have to walk me through the Search process. I obviously missed the importance of that.
            Several options.
            Could you just give a Use Case list of button pushes and possibly data entered with what you would like to happen for each press?

            Like;
            Start typing a name
            Display all matching records
            Select target and press button

              I never use menu bars so I neglected to even look at it. However; similar to the toolbar, you can create a new menu bar using all the existing choices. Then update the four record entry choices using the same code as in the toolbar.

              As I understand it, the issue here is that Alpha doesn’t think the form is in change mode until a change is actually made. So I’ve reverted to using the methodology I passed on here. One advantage is I can run custom xbasic code to do such things as activating the field that had focus when the change button was pressed. You can write xbasic to disable certain objects if the form is in change mode, like a list of buttons or prevent record navigation until the form has been returned to view mode.

              Gives me more control on how the form behaves when in enter/change mode vs view mode. I like to lock things down to avoid confusing the user if they press something that shouldn't be pressed.

                Here's the form in which I added restricting navigation and disabling a button in change mode.

                  Good stuff Ron!

                  I've noticed, when you press F3 or click on the pencil icon, the red X "Cancel icon" becomes active. Know of a way to capture this activity for use?

                    I'm not sure what you are asking? The Red X in the toolbar is controlled by the enable expression: topparent.control_text4.text="CHANGE"

                      regarding the search, how many records do you typically have in the table where you are searching
                      I display a readonly embedded browse on a separate form opened as a dialog that lets the user click in the field/column where he wants to search and fills as he types

                        El Zippo result.
                        It would be nice to see a stripped down example of what he's actually after.

                          Ted, if you go back to the very first post, all one needs to do is to import the working example into Alpha Sports. It's very clear what the desired results is to be.

                            Thanks Ron, I will try that but I was hoping that this was a working application issue.
                            AS Sports works fine so any new development might not.
                            Anyway, I will look at your suggestion.

                              Thanks Y'all. Sorry, my posts are so poorly written.

                              My dream is to type into a field and have it populate as you type until you see what your looking for.
                              Then, if a change is needed, press F3 or the pencil edit, and change what ever field you desire. Super clean and no extra button presses.

                              My thought is, I'll use one field for now to simplify. Cover / HIDE the field with a supercontrol dropdown browse. But then, if you ENTER a new record or CHANGE or EDIT or PENCIL edit the found record, the field then comes to the front and HIDEs the supercontrol Dropdown browse.
                              So simple, so hard!

                              In my not so knowledgeable mind, should be able to write an event like below.
                              IF currentmode = "VIEW"
                              firstname.hide()
                              dropdownbrowse1.show()
                              Else
                              firstname.show()
                              dropdownbrowse1.hide()
                              End if

                              Works great if entering a new record, but something with F3 and pencil edit. They don't make the record "dirty / active" until you go into a field and hit the space bar or start typing. Per my example layout.
                              F3 and Pencil icon light up the Cancel / red X icon on the menu bar, but do not make the record active, so the event will not fire.
                              Wonder what lights up the Red X? and can this be used as a trigger?

                              Hope this helps and makes sense.
                              Thanks very much.
