Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    V12 PC Network Settings Desktop

For years I have installed Alpha on networked PCs with machine administrator rights setup permanently, but greater security calls this increasingly into question.
So do I still need users to be machine administrators for Alpha 12 Desktop to fully function?

Secondly, I have taught all users to run redrtest.exe once a week to check that oplocks are still correct, given Windows 10 updates each week.
Some users are very good at taking a few seconds each to do this, other users often forget.
Again this is an old requirement. Is it still valid?

    What are the alternatives?
I am not an expert at editing the registry and rely on hardware companies in this area.

I currently use Alpha 12 6945 5512 desktop for its stability and use of pdf printer driver, having been burnt by some newer versions probably fixed for web apps but not for desktop users.

Finally, does anyone know if Alpha themselves should have an up-to-date install requirements files but I have never seen one?

Thank you for your help. It is much appreciated.

    Kind regards

    Alex

    Hello
Just out of interest can anyone tell me the least amount of privileges required to run A5V12 on a Windows server network?

    Many thanks

      Alex,

      1. Personal experience tells me you only need local admin rights to install the runtime on the workstations.
      2. Use the windows task scheduler to run redrtest.exe if necessary - you may need to set it to 'interact with ther desktop' if it displays results to the user.

Post 2 - each user needs write access to the directory where the db files are stored on the server. Other requirements would be site specific.

If I was to use the AlphaAnywhere Universal Installer to install on the workstations would that get over this objection of the user requiring admin rights to run our application?
        Many thanks

It might be a matter of giving users read/write/execute permissions on the specific folders.

Following on from Greggs comment, I used to create Guests, Users, Super Users and Administrators.
Different list of things they could do. Also means that you allocate responsibility and can follow up if you use the Audit facility as activated.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

I'm not sure what the conditions are presently, but since I started using Alpha in 1998, users had to have administrator rights - full read/write/create
All users for my clients have administrative rights

Just remembered - an experienced and fluent IT person can give administrative privileges to all alpha users - but ONLY alpha users and within a designated workspace. I ran into this with a client with several hospitals using my software - he fixed it.
