Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Calendar / Scheduler / Drop 'n Drag

    Good Morning...

I am interested in feedback from you folks, before I delve into what seems theoretically achievable in the desktop application side of Alpha.

Over and over again, I see calendar requests for the desktop. Why this has not been added by Alpha perplexes me.

In 2009, I built a web app for a night club that wanted an online reservation system to rent the club during the day when closed. For example, it could be rented for a birthday party or a holiday party.

The calendar I created was created based on the code in Peter Wayne's (Where is he these days, anyway?) book XBasic For Everyone.

I enhanced it, adding the ability to select colors to highlight events in the same category. Yellow might be birthdays, blue could be holiday parties, etc.

I also added a dark gray curtain (JavaScript) that cloaked the calendar when Dialogs opened.

Lastly, I grayed out and added days from prior and next month, giving a more continuous feeling to the calendar.

While never got paid for the job, I did keep the app. It took several days to create it.

It seems to me that I should be able (extensively) modify the code, and use it in a desktop form in an HTML box dragged from the Tool Box.

Any thoughts? Has anyone tried this, or anything similar, with success?

I am thinking Drop And Drag might be something that can be added, too.

I also suspect that, if this works, a chart like one used in a hotel reservation system could be achieved.

Attached are a few pics of the old calendar...

Am I on another planet, or does this seem possible?

Re: Calendar / Scheduler / Drop 'n Drag

I did a printable calendar with v7 many years ago. Not really a successful thing at all, but it did print.

The way I did it was up to five fields on each date of the month. About all I can remember, but the print operation had to run 2 times. There was not enough memory/resources available for all the needed fields on the report.

An html/JS should be workable. I been saying it for years, but I did not and do not have time for it right now.

That is pretty neat but unable to work for reservations as designed. You have designed around one resource - a club.
What for multiple hotel rooms running simultaneously. If you want to corroborate - give a shout and I'll post a calendar project I started for crane hire with half day rentals from 2 days to 100's over 80 cranes and vehicles. No drag and drop though.

        Quoting in my first post:

"It seems to me that I should be able (extensively) modify the code..."

Ray, you are right, it needs to be extensively modified to handle what it needs to handle first: Employee scheduling.

I'm just showing the pics to illustrate the idea. (I actually already created a version prior to this one that, since 2008, has been used to schedule Toy 'R Us Bike assembles here in the US. But that calendar lacks bells and whistels.)

The questions at hand are (More directly than before):

        1) Have you, or anyone else, used an HTML box from the Tool Box to dynamically grab data using XBasic? I mean, it looks like it can be done. It sounds like you have?

        2) Does that HTML box support HTML5? This would make it more likely that Drop 'n Drag is a possibility.

        3) That HTML box.... Is it really tied to the default browser, or is it a proprietary HTML window / browser made by Alpha programmers?

If I can build this, I'll see if I can parse it out of my software to post it in the code archive. It's sad that this great application lacks anything like this, but I guess I understand, since most custom apps need a custom scheduling solution.

        Thanks...

          OK, so...

Drop and drag "works", but NOT with the HTML choice on the Tool Box.

You must use Super controls Web Content or Web Content Chrome refering to a local .HTM (or .HTML) document. Your default browser must be IE 9 or above, or another browser that supports HTML5. Also, the documents must be set to default to open that browser.

Since 90% of POS systems are Windows XP, with IE 8, that's noteworthy.

The HTML object does support XBasic, so I am pretty sure the calendar will be possible.

The HTML object does not appear to support HTML Java scripting, so if that continues to be so, the calendar will be very basic.
