Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    inserting into rtf memo not showing

    a12, win8.1,
    form with memo field. Inserting text at table level. table is a grand child. top is parent and then a child and then grand child.
    Everything is indexed with simple indexes for table links into the set.
    text is in the memo field - no problem to this point.
    Text does NOT show on the form. Have tried all kinds of refresh, resynch and commit.
    if I move down/up one record and back to the record it shows fine and can be then edited.

    There is rarely more than 12 lines of text.

    On a rare occasion the text shows right up?? maybe 1 out of 10 times even identical text.

    Tried the script as a script and in the xbasic on the form.

    Tried a completely different script with a very different way to get the results. Still same issue

    Anybody got an idea. 5 days of this and.....

    Re: inserting into rtf memo not showing

    Hi, Dave,

    Is the memo field text being pasted in, or typed by hand? If typed by hand do you still have the display issue?

    Are you initially entering the text from a script? If so are you updating the value property of the RTF object, or are you writing directly to the table supporting the form? I've found it helpful to avoid switching styles within the context of a single script. If my script "talks" to objects in the form, I avoid inserting code that also talks to the underlying tables. And vice versa. If my script talks directly to the underlying table, I do not insert code in my script that talks to objects in the form. In your case I'd probably use code that talks to the objects in the form, rather than to the underlying table.

      No. By hand it would be fine.
      It is from a script and being sure of the table and field name
      No talking to objects on the form until after all other is done.
      Using 3 scripts here.
      1st makes sure the GC has a record,
      second talks at table level.
      Both work well.
      3rd gets info and at form level places a representation inot ch field. (1st 254 characters)

      Do you think that is a problem? all are from 1 button.

      actually, destroyed step 1 and 3, so all is at table level now. forgot I did that.

        Re: inserting into rtf memo not showing

        topparent:Spinstruct.refresh() is the rtfmemo
        after is script xbasic
        topparent.Commit()
        topparent.Resynch()
        topparent.Refresh_Layout()

        Remember. This text is in the table/field with correct record. there are several thousand records in the main table and many thousands in the child 1.m table + not quite so many in the gc which is really a memo table.
        Just does not show up on the form in that field until a change record and change back.

        anticipating next question fpt is 169,978KB, 2nd largest in the db

          Here is a new one:
          Once the memo has data in it, you can't delete/edit/add to it in anyway that will save

            would be interesting to see the script that adds the text - working with RTF memos is much much more complicated than with regular memos

              Yes it is and I do a lot of it.
              Tom, I was wrong, It does the same on manual entry. May have nothing to do with the script. Once something is actually in that field, it all works pretty good.

              I will get that for you. db being compacted now.

              Little muddled - done by somebody else a long time ago and redone by another in v8 - This is the copy I am trying to make work
              tables: order - inspections/2/3 - insp_specinstr(has the RTFmemo)
              Really acts like I left an open table, but I have not found it and db compacts fine.

                I think I have a work around with this

                I added a small script makes sure there is data in the id field on the form and inserts a space in the memo field.

                This whole thing ain't pretty, but it has to work!

                  Well, you understand how to work with rtf memos
                  let us know if it works

                  I know that your approach for a regular memo works for entering a record if there isn't one
                  but you may have to use the rtf memo type syntax to enter the space - not sure

                    Dave,

                    If I am reading your script correctly, you're entering the memo field data into a new record after opening a new instance of the grandchild table. This forces you to insert the link field value into the new record, right? Then the new data doesn't show up when the form is resynched.

                    I think a better approach would be to use the instance of the grandchild table that's already open. i.e. the one that opens when you open your form.

                      Martin,
                      I changed the entry to match rtfmemo entry.
                      It did not help

                        Tom, Martin,
                        It is still sporadic.
                        the child is a 1.m and may have up to 6 children on the form.
                        Choosing the child in a browse, and then either changing the memo in the GC or adding a new one, it is sporadic.
                        Mostly it is an issue when no record ever existed before in the GC before.

                            Martin,

                            Already doing Tom's approach in some instances
                            this is a 3 step application.
                            1st person enters a new record. The enter 1 - 8 new child records
                            2nd person comes along and adds other stuff to the children
                            3rd person comes along and sends email which is part of where this goes. this is the step where these instructions are added.
