Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

how to change the naming convention for reports

I am new to Alpha anywhere. Is there a way to change the naming convention of a printed report. Presently the naming convention defaults to something like this-> ( 4).pdf when I am printing as a pdf file. Older versions had the name of the table from which it originated. Thank You

Tell us the steps you follow to save the report as PDF.

If you wrote a script to automate this I believe you could specify the exact filename you wish Alpha to use when creating the PDF.

I simply use the print preview function, then use the print function from that screen, then use my Adobe printer driver to print the report.

        I see.

You're not using the built-in functionality to "save" the report as PDF, you are "printing" to a 3rd party driver. I don't have an answer to your question, then. Sorry.

          Hi Lou,
Not sure if you solved the problem. We are having the same issue. No question that Alpha is presenting a modified name to whatever you send to a pdf printer. We have to manually change the name back every time. Also, we get an error EVERY time we try to "save as" a pdf right from Alpha's FILE menu, we get an -30 error, and need to reboot Alpha because it will no longer allow you to change a printer in "printer setup". Frustrating.

I learned to live with it. However, I am not getting any errors but I am using Adobe pdf printer to print

Using Report.SaveAs allows you to use a predefined (unique) name to your PDF report.

              Example:
Fld5 = "ZRT_" + Fld1 + ".PDF" (This defines a unique name as Fld1 contains an invoice number)
              Archief = alltrim(VDocPath)+"\\"+"Frist"+alltrim(vStage)+"\\"+alltrim(VCust)+"\\" +Fld1+"\\"+Fld5
Report.SaveAs("Uni_Cert01","PDF", query.filter,query.order, var->Archief,.F.) (by changing .F. in .T., the pdf print dialog will be opened to print the report)

you are going about it the wrong way - from the preview screen you can click on the pdf button and it will automatically print to a pdf

                  Martin,

I assume you are responding to my post. You are right that from the preview screen you can click the pdf button and it will automatically print to a pdf.
My post was a response to the initial question: Is there a way to change the naming convention of a printed report?
I don't think I am going about it the wrong way. It is an alternative way to produce a pdf report with a different name than the original report name. In the example it produces a unique name.

Re: how to change the naming convention for reports

If you mean, more or less, that you would like to change the report name each time you print it, then I understand your frustration - however, if that is not the case, why not just change the name of the the report.

The easiest way would be to use 'report.saveas' which lets you name the report as part of the process. You could give the user an option to "name the report" and store the name in a variable, and use it in the report.saveas code.

As I think about it, you might use something like var->reportname + now() - this would give you a unique name that showed the date and time of the report, albeit the name would be a bit long.
