Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

List Controls Index not working in ver 12

In Alpha v11 I have an xdialog app that works flawlessly. I make extensive use of the List control to display SQL records and I can do the usual CRUD stuff by launching xdialogs from the list.

This is a typical sample that works in v11, but not v12:
    Code:
    [%dk%.200,25 index^"Acct:10|Trans_Id:10|Date:20|C-Type:15|Payee:45|Category:25|
    Status:10|DL:15|Debit:15|Credit:15|Balance:15
    "vTransactions_List!vSelect_Transactions_List_*];
The problem is that the list in v12 no longer assigns the "index" variable. Again, this works in v11, but not v12, so something has changed.

Does anyone know what the problem is?

Peter, you don't mention what build of v12 you are using. Going from v11 to the current v12 build, a lot of v12 has been rewritten. v12 build 4269 is very similar to v11. After 4269, a later version of .net was used to take advantage of new feature that would expand Alpha's web capabilities. If you can, try running your v11 app using v12 build 4269. If it works ok, then you may want to submit a bug report.

      Ronald,

Thank you very much for your great idea. I don't have 4269 installed but I went back to 2091 and that works as expected. I have the RT for 2089, so I'll use that. Thanks again!

        Peter,
I have a Alpha 5 package that I have written for the Chiropractic profession, called WideOpen. I have installed on about 30 doctors office. It is written in Alpha 10. I am getting to the point (probably should have awhile ago) of updating to a newer version.

So ultimately you have been around this development environment longer than I, what's the next best version? I have had Alpha 5 ver 10 2814 for over 8 years. I need a solid version with unlimited runtime version desktop only.

        Thanks for your insights.

PS I tried to post privately but the board said you had too many private posts. So funny.

I would not upgrade, as long as the current version is working OK. If there are new features that you need, then that is a different story. However, if you do decide to upgrade, I would go from 10 to 11.

            Hi Bob,

I'll have to check my private posts. I didn't know i was "full".

The only issue I have with Martin's idea is that you probably can't even get v11. Alpha won't support it in any case. If you have a v10 RT and it's working great, you probably should stick with it. But keep in mind, if you ever have to move the v10 developer to a new machine, you might not be able to activate it. That's the problem I described above. I contacted Alpha support, but they said you have to buy v12 (which I already have anyway). AFAIK, Alpha hasn't added many desktop features in v12, maybe a few in v11, mostly xdialog related, I think.

                Peter, Ted and Martin,
I do have version 11 just never progressed to it. I attempted recently updated my development machine from Windows 7 to Windows 11 and then ran into the activation issue. Luckily it saved my old Activation key.

So that started my mind a wandering to maybe its time to update some "stuff". I just happened to run into an inability to export and import a form now - which didn't happen prior my attempt to update Windows 11.

The error now is "Unrecognized extension for library", upon import. This error never occurred prior to the update.

So very long story short. What version is best for the future with "unlimited runtime license and stable desktop version? It sounds like v11 if I have it which I do but that then begs the question best stable version of v11 and does some one have it if I don't.
Support from Alpha 5 - definitely lacking even by my standards.

                I appreciate all your input.

                Bob

                  Alpha 5 - Support

I have version 3381 of v11 but I can not activate it. Wow is anyone at Alpha 5 listening?? Seriously - if you buy something you should be able to activate it.

Win11 without trying Win10 might be an issue. I am avoiding it cos all I get is spam and ads which I have to manage - yet again.
Latest trick is seting my browser to delete all saved passwords. Good job Google can recover them.
