Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    PDF's won't save

I'm on the latest build. For the past month or so, I can longer 'save as' a pdf, i.e. when viewing a 'Letter' type document and clicking File/Save as, it allows me to select the destination folder, but on pressing 'OK', the dialogue box closes and then... nothing. The document does not get saved and nor does the it open in the pdf viewer.

I'm not aware that I've changed anything, so I am guessing that the problem might be to do with a recent build. Any pointers would be gratefully appreciated.

Oops! Please cancel all of the above! I just tried to save to pdf from a different PC on the network and it worked perfectly. So I guess I need to look at my own PC for the issue...

Larry, do you have the old Amyuni Document Converter 450 (printer) installed on the pc with the problem?
I am moving an old desktop application to a new installation of Alpha Anywhere and it is going well except I can not save a report as a pdf. In the desktop application I can generate reports using print preview or by running the report. But using the icons in the menu bar above the report I can not save the report as a pdf. I can save the report as html or rtf or xls or txt but not as a pdf. When I try to save as a pdf I get an error message as: script: a5w_saveAs() line:98 Variable "request" not found. I can work around this by first running a script with the line: dim global request as p. But I don’t like creating a global variable for this fix. This is a very recent download of Alpha Anywhere. I don't know if this is relevant but I still have the old Amyuni Document Converter 450 (printer) installed since I need it for another application.

Hi Irwin. That's a very good question. Sadly, I don't know the answer. I looked at my printer drivers and it is listed simply as: Microsoft Print to PDF. I looked at the properties and that is all it says. Could you advise where to look for the version etc?

And the plot thickens... Now I think about it, I am the only user in my office that can print pdf's to an HP 24" plan printer - so there is something different about my driver. I am on an HP laptop

Hi Larry, Open devices and printers from the windows control panel or from settings. If you see the listing of the AMYUNI AlphaFivePrinter then the driver is installed. If not then the version of Alpha you are using does not need that device. Sounds like it is not installed so that can not be your problem. Meanwhile, does anyone reading this know anything about the error msg: script: a5w_saveAs() line:98 Variable "request" when trying to save a report as a pdf.

Hey Irwin - I'm not sure if this is the same problem, but I do know that Windows updates will sometimes 'break' the Amyuni driver. My coworkers will let me know that they 'can't save a PDF', and I never look at the error message.
I go to Printer Properties for the driver, Advanced tab, and change the driver to something else temporarily (usually the 400 driver, but I think anything will work), save, then switch it back to the 450. This *usually* works, but when it doesn't, I will re-install the 450 driver. One of these 2 steps has always restored full functionality.
I hope that helps, but I'm really not sure if that's the same error.

Seeing the following in the latest release, it looks like I was onto something: "Reports - Saving reports to PDF in desktop applications failed."
