Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Michael, you might copy the "old directory" to a temporary folder, then open the "old" database (workspace), and then "export" the desired function. This will create a specially formatted text file that can be "imported" into the current database (workspace).

        Explain a bit.
Both Tom and Stan are correct.
If you created a function in the code tab(UDF), that is saved in the adb files. You can right click on the function in the old folder's space and copy to you adb in the new folder space.
If you used a function in a form, report or other, then your xbasic is save with either the set or the table. Probably easiest to copy the xbasic you created to the form or.... from the old app.

Some of us keep our code in a safe place once we get it going. Word, notepad or alpha tables.

Hmm, what happened was, the database file was over written, and I was told to copy over a certain amount of files ADB ALM etc, those overwrote the files there, I think the function is gone, not that big of deal as I can re-write it. I'm somewhat new to alpha's way of saving files and what not, so it was a bit confusing.

Aside from normal database backups, I believe what Dave was alluding to is that you can go to the code tab of the control panel, right click in an empty area, and choose Export... Keep that file as a backup somewhere. With a form in design mode you can use the View menu, Code Explorer, Export button. Save that as well.

Re: Where are xbasic functions saved

              Actually,
I have one client that has all their xbasic code in word files. Once they completed a script, function, or whatever, they copied the code and pasted it into a word file. Another has a database setup where they do the same. Another uses .txt files saved in a folder.

That way they can store the work and not have to try to figure out where it might be.

I have never used the export/import. I have used the "copy to" quite often. I have a function in an app that I need in another one? I go to that function in the app and right click on it and use "copy to" and choose the app where I need it.

Re: Where are xbasic functions saved

The export is quite handy even if you never intend to import the result. Nicely formatted output. Especially handy for a form so you don't have to check each object for events. In the form export you can also filter out flyover events easily and only select onpush for example.

SOunds like that's what I'll do going forward, its how I've been bringing scripts from our test server to our production server, I had just not saved that particular function as a text file yet.

Just so we're clear. I wouldn't try to save each script and function to separate files. The export button from the code tab allows you to export all. Save that and it is easy enough to copy and paste one to a new text file for importing or you can select the one to import from the all file via the import genie.
