The Alpha Software Forum Participation Guidelines

The Alpha Software Forum is a free forum created for Alpha Software Developer Community to ask for help, exchange ideas, and share solutions. Alpha Software strives to create an environment where all members of the community can feel safe to participate. In order to ensure the Alpha Software Forum is a place where all feel welcome, forum participants are expected to behave as follows:
  • Be professional in your conduct
  • Be kind to others
  • Be constructive when giving feedback
  • Be open to new ideas and suggestions
  • Stay on topic


Be sure all comments and threads you post are respectful. Posts that contain any of the following content will be considered a violation of your agreement as a member of the Alpha Software Forum Community and will be moderated:
  • Spam.
  • Vulgar language.
  • Quotes from private conversations without permission, including pricing and other sales related discussions.
  • Personal attacks, insults, or subtle put-downs.
  • Harassment, bullying, threatening, mocking, shaming, or deriding anyone.
  • Sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language.
  • Sexually explicit or violent material, links, or language.
  • Pirated, hacked, or copyright-infringing material.
  • Encouraging of others to engage in the above behaviors.


If a thread or post is found to contain any of the content outlined above, a moderator may choose to take one of the following actions:
  • Remove the Post or Thread - the content is removed from the forum.
  • Place the User in Moderation - all posts and new threads must be approved by a moderator before they are posted.
  • Temporarily Ban the User - user is banned from forum for a period of time.
  • Permanently Ban the User - user is permanently banned from the forum.


Moderators may also rename posts and threads if they are too generic or do not property reflect the content.

Moderators may move threads if they have been posted in the incorrect forum.

Threads/Posts questioning specific moderator decisions or actions (such as "why was a user banned?") are not allowed and will be removed.

The owners of Alpha Software Corporation (Forum Owner) reserve the right to remove, edit, move, or close any thread for any reason; or ban any forum member without notice, reason, or explanation.

Community members are encouraged to click the "Report Post" icon in the lower left of a given post if they feel the post is in violation of the rules. This will alert the Moderators to take a look.

Alpha Software Corporation may amend the guidelines from time to time and may also vary the procedures it sets out where appropriate in a particular case. Your agreement to comply with the guidelines will be deemed agreement to any changes to it.



Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Active Link Table Creator Selection List Does Not List All Tables in Database...

    My company runs Global Shop on a Pervasive SQL database set which contains 1302 tables. When I attempt to add active link tables (or any tables), the table selection list ends at table 1000. We need more tables to choose from in the list, or some way to filter out the ones we won't want added to the list.

    The Alpha selection list of these tables begins here: Pervasive_Begin.png

    And ends here: Pervasive_End.png

    With more than 300 to go: Pervasive_More.png

    The table I need is TIME_ATTENDANCE which is 28 tables further down the list. Splitting the database, or renaming tables is not an option. Creating a new table name that will appear further up the list, and replicating the contents with an internal script within Global Shop is not an option.

    Having Alpha present a complete list is an option.

    Try creating an active link definition to a table you can see, then modify the connection string to reference the desired table and fields. A5V11 is no longer being updated.

      We are actually running A5V12, but there was no forum entry for "Alpha Five Version 12". So is there a setting, registry entry, or anything that will cause the selector to read more than 1000 tables?

      And where do I modify the connection string so that it points to a different table?

        Appears I was mistaken about modifying the link definition. That only applies to the connection, not the individual tables therein.

          A5v12 desktop message board threads can find a home in the Windows Desktop forum. This is a sub-forum of Alpha Anywhere (v12).

            It seemed to be a viable work-around, but it didn't work for me. I created a new work space, and attempted to create a single table using a custom SQL statement; "select * from TIME_ATTENDANCE".

            Apparently, Alpha can open the table and read the fields because the surrogate key selector is populated with the correct field names from TIME_ATTENDANCE:

            After finishing the surrogate key selection, and finishing the window, the "Specify Table Name" dialog box pops up:

            But no linked table is created:

            Empty Control Panel.png

            So it appears that Alpha is ignoring any table that is not present in the selection list, and will not create a linked table unless the table name exists there. It needs to read in all of the tables in the database, or the missing ones cannot be linked to an Alpha table.

            Maybe Alpha could provide a filter for selecting a range of tables BEFORE it populates the list? It has a wildcard selector, but it only works on tables already in the list.

            I'll take this issue to the Windows Desktop forums....Thanks!

It appears that Alpha developers never expected anyone to attempt to create a database with more than 1000 tables, since that is the exact count of tables read into the selection list, and this is the largest table count I have ever seen in a single database. But this database was created by Global Shop and cannot be split, or have the table names changed, and I do not wish to create a replicated table that must be updated all the time just to mirror the one that Alpha can't get to.

              Alpha forums user Stan Matthews suggested a work-around where I would bring in a table that can be seen, and modify its link definition to point to the table and fields desired. This works for tables that appear on the list, because changing the link definition did indeed swap out the field names in the linked table, but it did not work when I tried a custom SQL statement calling for the table that was not on the list, even though the table was opened, and Alpha could display the correct field names in the dialog box for selecting surrogate key fields. Upon completion, the original linked table was not modified in any way, so I tried something else.

              I created a new work space, and attempted to create a single table using a custom SQL statement; "select * from TIME_ATTENDANCE".

                If you build an ad hoc connection you are offered the option of filtering the list of tables but I'm not sure the filtering options would be helpful.

                  SOLVED!!!!!

                  Selwyn Rabins replied with the solution:



                  In the development environment, select the "View" menu, select "Settings", then in the dialog box under "System" select "Preferences", "SQL Databases" and finally, "Maximum number of tables and views to show."

                  I set ours to 1500 and we're good to go!

                      Hi Stan! Thank you very much for your suggestions. They helped me explore the options a lot more closely than I otherwise would have, and your first suggestion, bringing in a visible table and adjusting its link definition, actually worked for tables that were visible in the list, so even though it didn't help in my situation, I see that it could come in handy in the future. You were right the first time, by the way, in that the complete definition can be manipulated beyond just the connection string for selecting the table AND the fields you want to include. In my case, however, it turned out that Alpha refused to either update or create a table that it did not read into the selection list, so the work-around wasn't an option.

                      The filter for the selection of table types is available on the other configuration dialog boxes as well as the ad-hoc, but it only operates on data table sets that have already appeared on the list. Selwyn Rabins pointed me to a setting for number of tables to be read. The default setting was 1000 tables, so after bumping this up to 1500 everything works fine.
