Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Update Records Globally in Runtime?

I am using Alpha at 12 computer stations in my building running on one server. Right now I have the full Alpha Anywhere developer on my computer (one of the stations) and runtime on all of the other stations. I have several of co-workers that want to be able to create search/replace operations to update all the records in a table at once. (Example: change the sales rep name on all of their accounts when that person is no longer with us).

They tried going to "Tools" "Create Operation" and walk through the genie to search/replace the information, but it came up with this error: "The feature you are trying to use is not available in the Alpha Five Runtime. It is only available in the full version of Alpha Five."

My computer is the only one that has not come up with this error. Do I have to have the developer software on every individual computer station for them to make global updates? Can users make batch updates without developer on their computer?

It would be extremely expensive to buy that many copies of the developer software to make adjustments that anyone could make on our old Alpha 4.

    Any solutions would be appreciated.

Instead of search and replace use an update operation. Create an update operation, for example, to change the sales rep name to "Jim". Capture the xbasic of the operation and modify it to accept variables instead of the static value you use in the operation genie. Create a form where they can enter the variable and give them a button to run the xbasic.

You'll want to validate that they did enter a value so as not to wipe out the current value.

Actually you probably want two variables. One for the replacement value and one for the original value.

    There can be only one.

And to answer your question about runtime. No, they can't do that from runtime. Yours may be different, but most users would abuse that and create havoc.

Just a bit from past experience with a car sales application. Such things were only allowed by one or two specific managers.

To explain Stan's move a bit.

They should have to type a valid "name" and a valid "new name"

You do understand that in a sales environment, they could assign pending sales and other to themselves?

restrict the update to an administrator - Stan's approach would work perfectly

          Amanda,

The Update Operation Stan recommends is very powerful and potentially very dangerous. During your development work and testing, use a separate copy of the database in a safe "sandbox" folder. Do not get acquainted with it using live data. Furthermore, it's prudent to make a couple of good backups before building or modifying any Update Operation, even in the sandbox. Once the update runs it's virtually impossible to "undo" it.
