Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    password protecting scripts

using 2999-4519. documentation says to pw protect a script you put 'password foo at the top. That's the way it has always worked. I am using a trial version to evaluate v12. Does it work in a licensed version? Can anyone confirm that it works?
    thanks

    Re: password protecting scripts

just tested it. It works as advertised.

"foo" is Alpha's default word for anything you want to put in there. I would probably NOT use "foo"

      Re: password protecting scripts

I was NOT using "foo". I put that in my post as an example only. Using my "real" pw, it does not work. That is why I asked if perhaps it was due to the fact that I am using a trial version.

        Using v12 now
        'password George 'example in autoexec.
        works

that is the first line above everything

I also use encryption for some tables, so

        default_encryption_key_set("mystuff")

then use encryption on the tables needed. I did it from a password protected script.

          Re: password protecting scripts

Thanks for the response Dave, but it does not work on v12 at my end. It is no different than setting a password in v9. I set a password in a test script exactly as you indicated, I even used your "George" password. First line in the script as follows 'password George. I then saved the script, exited v12, re-entered v12 and went to edit the script. It asked for the password, and I entered "George", but it kept saying the password is incorrect. I have no idea why it doesn't work here.
          thanks anyway,
          John

            John,

I wasn't being sarcastic, just overstating the obvious.

Maybe re-installing the update would fix things.

            Sorry if I seemed obnoxious.

              Hi John,
Definitely works for me in V12 sample script below

              'password guesswhat

              ui_msg_box("THIS IS","a password protected script")

What I have found is that having created the script(s) you need to close and restart Alpha to see if they work.
Also if you use the same password for a number of scripts in your app you need only enter it once to access all the scripts in design mode.

Not to suggest silly solutions, but I take it you tried a database compact just after backing up everything, right?

                  Re: password protecting scripts

No problem Tom....I have done it all, but it will not work on my installation. I have the latest version on a trial. I did find that if I create a script in version 9 or 10, put a pw on it, then copy it to v12, the password sticks, and when I put it in, the script opens. Thanks for the replies
