Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Object Properties not showing in July update

I would like to request help with a problem I am having with A5V12 July update.
    Please see attached file...

    ObjectPropertiesProblem.pdf

As illustrated in the attachment, since I updated to the July 28 update the Object Properties form does not populate.
But when I go back to the February update the form populates properly.

I sent a bug report and Selwyn and Jerry Brightbill spent quite a bit of time trying to assist me... however, they could not duplicate the problem on any of the machines that they checked.

Here's where I need you help:
    1) if you have updated to Bulid 2999 (July 2015) could you please check to see if the Object Properties form is populating properly & let me know what you observe.
    2) if you have encountered this problem and have ANY idea how I might solve the problem please let me know.

I have duplicated the problem on 3 separate computes running Win 7 Win 8.1 and Win 10.

It is particularly fustrating as I just updated my subscription and it now looks like I will not be able to run any future updates.

    Thank you for your assistance

Martin is correct David. I don't always follow the advise though.

If you would send a copy of the app to me, I will look at it. Please send what I need to do to duplicate the problem. I have win7 and win10 available here.
since win8 should be exact same as win10, I no longer use win8

I'll take a look, also. Please post sample that illustrates the issue, with instructions for us to follow for testing.

In the meantime, I'm curious if this is unique to a single form or "context" ? i.e. do you see the same problem examining objects in AlphaSports?

          Yes.. very good advice.

In this case I was hoping to develop a desktop app that I have been slowly working on for (hard to believe) 15 years!
... started way back in DOS version.
I hope to develop a hybrid app that is mainly desktop but exposes some tables using a web app.

DaveM... I dont think that a copy of the app would help much... I sent a copy to Selwyn and Jerry Brightbill and they were unable to duplicate the problem.

If your setup is experiencing what I am observing than you will see the problem by opening any form where you have an OnInit event that is programmed with Action Scripting... select Variables-> Set Variable to Constant...
then attempt to set the value of an existing variable to Object Properties (aas illustrated in the pdf I attached to original post... if you are experiencing the problem there will be nothing in the object list.
If I do the same thing, with the same form / variable in the version from February it works ok and the Object list is populated.

              Tom...
I see the same thing with Alphasports and other example databases.

Re: 'Post sample' please see my response to DaveM... nevertheless I have attached an example.

                Dave,

I have update2999 on a win7 machine, and I went to add code to an on_fetch event on one of our forms. When I went to object explorer, the following appeared. I have no problem with object properties.

                ...sorry

                  Thanks Tom...
since Selwyn and Jerry could not duplicate the problem I expect that most people will not experience the problem...

I am hoping that 2 or 3 people will see the problem and this may lead to finding a common cause.

suggestion - in the meantime, don't use 'object explorer' - right click on an object and pick properties, on push, on arrive, etc to get values

Thanks Martin... but I'm not sure how this would work... I am using Action Script to initialize a global variable with the current value of an Object on the current form.

                            David,

I see the same behavior here on my Win 10 laptop. The genie fails to populate the list of objects and properties. Cannot figure out why, so I don't have an answer for you.

                            I'm running A5v12.3 build 2999.

                              Thanks Tom...
Have you had any problems with the alpha license on your laptop?... do you have the RunTime installed as well as the Dev?
Just before the problem started I had some difficulties with my license... very strange behaviour... I installed the runtime then the Dev... BUT the dev installed as RT.
Alpha support spent some time with me and we uninstalled the RT and the Dev and cleaned up various Registry entries... support said I should never install the RT and the Dev on the same machine.
I am wondering if there is some strange license protection that A5V12 is using as of July this year.
I'm 'grabbing at straws'... hopefully other users will respond and we can detect something common.
