Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    set index corruption

i'm looking for some feedback for an app i wrote over 10 years ago. it uses a set with one child table and the link field is memo number.
wirked fine but in the last month or so, i'm seeing some corruption. a user will enter a record, it will assing a memo number but when it writes it, it somehow saves the child record with a memo number form the first record in the table, not the one assigned. i'm thinking it could be happening if multiple users save at the same time. i noticed the user who enters the most, is using the live db, while all of the others are using a shadow. approximately 30 users have access.

i tried to circumvent proble this when i first wrote it. i use an xdialog as the front end, and when you user clicks to save it, i write a blank header record to assign the memo number, quick and simple. then i have a regular alpha form that i populate with the data from the xdialog and save the form to populate the header and child tables..
like i said, been working for years until recently.

anyone have any thoughts on this or how i can modify it to possible stop this from happening? is my method flawed? not sure i would do it this way, today, though.

    A few ideas Gary..
    1) Check the Order Expression has not become corrupted in the Index definition, in fact, check them all and make sure that the memo number is being created correctly.
    2) Stop the user who has access to the live Db. Make them use a shadowed one. That will/should handle record locking and indexing as direct access does not usually provide this feature and things go wrong.
    3) Run and <Index>.UPDATE() [in the Help Text] from the Control Panel when everyone is off the application.

thanks ted. i did ask IT yesterday to move the users to a shadow, thinking that may be an issue. i rebuilt the indexes a month ago and will do it again. i will check the order expressions.

There are some post here about auto reindexing overnight if that will help.

ok, thanks ted. i'll search for them.

and ronald, i do have backups, and it's not a memo field. it's a character field that holds a credit memo number.

I'm a little late here but I'll give an effort. You wrote this:
"a user will enter a record, it will assing a memo number". Please clarify what this assignment of a memo number is in detail. Is this an increment field value? A calculated value from a lookup of the last table record? How is this new "memo number" established?
