Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Charts not showing

I have created a number of forms and reports with charts (created using genie)

Most work very well but some exhibit a strange behaviour... they do not display when the form is loaded.
The charts in reports (which were simply copied from the form after they were developed) always display properly... the problem is only with the exact same charts that are located on a form.

If I refresh the form the chart will sometimes display properly. If I click a button that previews the chart on a report the chart always displays on the report and sometimes will magically appear in the form when I close the report... (more often it will not).

Sometimes, if I open the form and the chart area is blank, and then exit the form and immediately reopen the form, the chart will display properly.

This happens with some charts but never with others. I can not see a pattern, all charts are bar charts some horizontal some vertical.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas about a fix?

    Re: Charts not showing

David, I have no experience with this.

But if it were me, I'd try a couple of things.

First, I'd see if it's possible to "refresh" the chart object, perhaps from the onActivate or onFetch events in the form.

Next, I'd see if there are any machines on the network which always display the charts correctly. Investigate differences in the hardware, or windows display settings.

If none behave correctly all the time, I'd submit a bug report with a malfunctioning sample, including information about your hardware (video display adapters), and display settings.

    Good luck -- tom

      Thanks Tom

I do have refresh actions taking place on init and by user click on [Refresh] button... I'll try changing this to include an object refresh.
All computers on the network react similarly... just a few charts/forms. The computers are running with XP WIn7 and WIn 8. I suspect that the video cards/drivers vary. I will check display settings.

I am reluctant to submit a bug report because sometimes the problem does not appear for days or even weeks. Then, for no reason that I can detect, the chart does not appear... once I get it to appear (by refresh, close open, etc) it consistently appears correctly until the session is ended and A5 runs again.

      VERY peculiar.

I'll let you know how things go when I have more information.

      David

            Re: Charts not showing

            Hi Keith...
Sadly no... The best that I have been able to do is have the user sent to a report preview that has the exact same chart (I just copy it from the form that is giving me trouble to a blank report).
I then fire an onprintinit event that displays a dialog asking if they want to print the report or go to the form.
Strangely... once the print preview has displayed the chart, the form always displays correctly.

It's a bit awkward but it works and the users have not (so far) complained that they are not placed in the form before the print preview aka 'chart display' is presented.
As with most software producers, I sell it as an 'undocumented feature'!

            Hope this helps

              Hi David

              Strange nobody has a solution.

My issue is a little stranger than the issue you had.

I have two identical applications for two separate customers. In one app, the chart works fine but when I created it in the second app I have the same problem you had and I'm at a loss as to why.
I've narrowed it down to the argument bindings and filter records. If I use a "fixed" value in the filter it works but if I use the variable named in the arguments it doesn't display the chart on the form as you experienced, but it works on a report. Furthermore, the expression for the data label wont work either, I get a "eval(passed_expression): Argument is incorrect data type" error. Yet in the first app it works fine.

Thx for your reply, I'll keep pounding away (and using harsh language!)

              Regards,

                Hi David

I found a solution, similar to yours.
I created a form with just the chart in it then used that as a sub form on the main form. Works really good but one draw back, you have to move the mouse over it for it to refresh.

                Regards,
