Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Puzzling Text Export

I have an app I developed that exports data in a table to a comma delimited text file.
Even though both these files were generated from the same table (but different data loaded), you can see that in one file the export incorrectly adds the "+chr(10)+ to the beginning of each record.
Why would it do that and how do I make it not put that extra part into the file. I've searched the file for oddball characters (double-quotes, etc.) and the data looks normal as far as I can tell.
Something else that is odd is that the data is supposed to be sorted by the first field (SKU). It correctly sorts with the one batch of data but not the other.
The correct sorting doesn't matter if it is in the export or I sort the records in an embedded browse.

That's an invisible linefeed character. Normally not possible to store this in an Alpha character field.

You aren't exporting from a memo field are you?

You are working with native Alpha tables, right?

In any case you have the tools in Alpha to scrub the resulting CSV file if you can't figure out where the unwanted linefeeds are coming from.

I just took a look at the source file using Edit Plus. It shows a single line-feed as you'd expect to start a new record on the next line but no extra line-feeds
Take a look at the file before I import it into my app. I've also attached the screen shot of edit-plus showing only the line-feed you'd expect.

        Importing?

        I thought you were exporting.

Questions in my previous post have not yet been addressed.

          Re: Puzzling Text Export

My app first imports a text file so it can be used in A5. The HHUPC.TXT file imported and is the original source of raw data.
That imported data looks good by viewing it in browse mode using A5.
In a separate operation, it exports via A5 the data to be saved for archiving. That's when the +chr(10)+ appears. The exported data comes from an A5 table at this point.
I can scrub the extra characters from that file but the sort is the killer. A separate application that uses that data must have it sorted or it won't function properly...it's needs the sort to do binary searches.

I found a work around to get things going for my customer. I used notepad to remove those extra characters and then restored the data and then the sort and future exports worked.
I just hope he doesn't run across this stuff on a regular basis.

          Thanks Tom.

tom, actually you can store a return/linefeed in a character field - with xbasic

Interesting. Thanks, Martin. Did not know that. I am surprised. Did not think the Foxpro format permitted it.
