Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Connect to v12 dbf tables

    Hello all,
Is it still possible to connect to dbf tables
Using the Foxpro odbc or or ole db?
I need to connect to alpha dbf table form
FedEx shipmanager. I made a DSN with Foxpro
Odbc and was able to read from the tables but it
Seems like I can not write back to them. I
Need to write tracking no and shipping cost to
Alpha dbf table. But it seems like the connection is
    Readonly.
    I appreciate any help,
    Thanks
    Nick

Hello Nick - Happy New Year fellow Angelean!
Have you seen the links on this page from Microsoft? Using Connection Strings

It looks to me like you might be able to build it into the connection string...

Re: Connect to v12 dbf tables

Since I am connecting from FedEx integration setup ,I have to use a ODBC DSN . FedEx does not have any configuration it just asks for the DSN . I looked at
the configuration for Foxpro ODBC. It is set for free tables and collation is set for "Machine" .The "Null" and "fetch on the background" check boxes are checkd.
It does not ask for user name or password and since my Alpha database is password protected i don't know how its even reading the tables .
Is it possible to write to alpha dbf tables using Foxpro ODBC ?
I contacted the FedEx integration support staff and she is willing to come to may office to help but I think this is a Alpha issue not a Shipmanager issue.
Again I appreciate any help .I just don't know how to go forward.
        Thanks,
        Nick.

Re: Connect to v12 dbf tables

I just noticed that the index for the table which I am connection to gets corrupted after FedEx try to export data to it.
I am exporting two fields to the Alpha table , one is Tracking number which is a charterer field the other is shipping_cost .
After I re-index the table I see that the Tracking number field has been updated but the shipping_cost field is not.
In my table the shipping_cost filed is a Numeric field with length of 7 with 2 decimal poisons.
I don't know what this means.
Again ,Please let know any suggestions.

Nick did you try to make it an active link table? With read write permissions?
Also If I remember correctly Fedex is MSSQL databases, either way should be able to use active link and write back I do this with many different types of DB like PSQL.

Re: Connect to v12 dbf tables

I have come to the conclusion that connecting to native DBF table with write rights is not workable. So I think the best way to go forward is to upsize my database.
I have chosen Mysql as the as the back end but I can use some guidance.
These questions comes to mind :
                1) Should I upsize all tables , most tables or only the tables with specific data that I think need to be accessed using a server?
                2) Will I be able to backup and restore like before?
                3) Will I still be able to shadow the database?
                4) Will it be a lot more difficult make an installation?
And any other tips or warnings is greatly appreciated.
                Thanks again

What about exporting Fedex data to a csv file and importing that into A5?

It's a lot more work to move from dbf, but may be worth it.

Robin's idea of csv files to Alpha is workable and focuses on the issue.

Have a target directory for Fedex to write to and an Alpha watch process to bring in the data as the files appear.

Thanks Robin & Al, I was thinking along the same lines myself, but did not know about The watch methods .I looked them in alpha help and it look great but have a couple of questions.
                        1) which Flag to use to watch.
                        2) what happen if I modify the file after I read it in my code (clearing the last FedEx entry) will the code be called again?
should I delete the watch in code and recreate it after I clear the last entry?
                        3) what is the scope of the watch
                        Thank again,
                        Nick

You can look at the "modified" date and time field of the csv file and work your "Watch" on that

FILE_GET_DATE_TIME() returns the date and/or time on which the file specified by filename was last updated. This high level command is easier than using the low level FILEFIND.GET().

Thanks Tom, I used an active-link table linked to an access table and
Exported to the access table from fedex .l made watch process and watched the folder
Containing the table and when the watch triggers I add the exported data
To where I need it to go.
