Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Field on form will not go away

I have a field on a form that I use every day. This field (which is indexed) was halfway occluded with a hotspot so that it would recalculate the value in the field when the hotspot was clicked. As it stands the field is on the edge of my working form so it extends my form unnecessarily. I have tried to delete this field from the form and it will not allow itself to be highlighted so it can be deleted. In the design mode, clicking where the field is visible only gives the properties of the overlying form.

In the entry mode the data in the field can be changed.

I cannot make this field go away. Does anybody have any ideas why this is impervious to deletion?

    Thanks

In Design mode, use the menu to open the Object Explorer.
    View - Object Explorer

with that tool you can click on the object list on the left side and press the Select Object button below the list.

    Then press the keyboard delete.

    The object is now deleted.

I've seen similar on a report. I put a field on the report and it would show the outline of the field. I could not delete it. I opened and closed the report editor many times, dragged the field to the report and then tried to delete it, but it would never go away. and the report would no longer even run. it's just a character field that I store the time in.

I think it may be a bug.

Have you tried the solution that I mentioned?

It works on any type of layout.

yes, al, I tried that when I first saw the problem. it doesn't even know the filed is there. but something is wrong, because the report would work any longer.

Can you post or email me a sample of it with data that reproduces the problem?

              Al,

Thank you very much. Your fix worked handily. This issue has been bugging me for some time. I suspected there was a way to do it but I never made the connection.

                That's great news.

I'm sure I picked that up on the messageboard a few years back and it's been working it's magic ever since.

Now if we can get Gary's issue resolved this will be a better world.

don't know what my issue was. it was a character field named time. whenever I dragged it into a report, the report was hosed. I renamed the field and it worked. must have been something that got fixed when I renamed it. tried compacting and recreating the dictionary but nothing worked until I renamed it.

created a character named time in another db and it worked. so, I don't have an explanation.

Always a good practice to avoid names that are non-descriptive and easily confused with reserve words.

People have to read the code and people wrote the interpreters and compilers.
