Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Installation Maker not present in Tools, Utilities menu

    I have both developer and runtime+ installed on one computer and have run the runtime version from the start menu. Alpha 5 V12. I do not have Installation Maker as an option in the utilities menu, only: Throttle Runtime User Count, Manage Freeform Report Conversion, and Restore Position of Hidden Windows.

    Suggestions?

    They dropped installer with v12
    I think v11 was the last of it.
    I never used it anyhow and opted for a commercial installer.

    There is one being put together by a developer here https://forum.alphasoftware.com/show...10-v11-amp-v12
    It may be complete now.

      Just what I'm going to be needing in a month or so..... Have you used it? (I have ZERO experience with installers. ~ On that note, any recommendations?)

        I don't and won't use it in the near future. I have Astrum Install maker that does everything I need and it is now free.
        You can install files, run files before, during and after installs, choose a folder(or not), and a lot more. Even set the runtime license key in the Registry so clients never see it.

          That is very interesting (hiding the runtime installer key) I have subscribed threads here where you made reference to the Astrum installer. But the link to http://www.thraexsoftware.com/ no longer seems valid. I also have several references to http://www.actualinstaller.com/. (which is a good link)

          I found v.2.29.60 online which indicates it's now freeware. Does it still require a registration key? (as I recall, it did) If so, I think Thraexsoftware may be "history."

                I use Createinstall for many years. http://www.createinstall.com/. Works good. They have a free, and two paid versions.

                  FWIW....

                  As those of you who've been around awhile know, I was one of, if not "the", original supporters of Astrum but I've recently run into problems getting it to do a good install in Windows 10. And, since it's no longer supported, there's no hope of it getting fixed.

                  My install routines are not simple. From what I can tell, a simple install of files is not a problem. However, I've had a couple of my install routines - which all work fine in previous versions of windows - simply fail during the install and I've never been able to fully set the Run As Admin in Win 10. (It sets the registry entry but Windows 10 still doesn't recognize it for some reason.)

                  Consequently, I'm currently checking out INNO and will also take a look at Create Install mentioned above by Andy.

                  My first question with INNO was whether or not I could read a registry value to determine where to install updates. I finally figured that out if anyone needs it. (Creating the registry value in the first place is a built-in process for the INNO Script Studio program that comes with the installer. Getting the value out on subsequent updates was the issue.)

                  Set the DefaultDirName like this:
                  DefaultDirName={code:GetInstallDir}

                  Then include this in a [CODE] section (changing some values to match your own app of course):
                  [Code]
                  function GetInstallDir(Param: string): string;
                  var
                  InstallDir: string;
                  begin
                  // This first "Result" is your default folder if the registry value doesn't exist.
                  Result := 'C:\AIMS_DC';
                  // The arguments are: Root Key, SubKey, String Value name, Result variable name )
                  if RegQueryStringValue(HKEY_CURRENT_USER, 'Software\AIMS DataCom\Trak_It_SP', 'DataPath', InstallDir ) then
                  begin
                  // It successfully read the value from my "DataPath" registry string into "InstallDir" so reset "Result".
                  Result := InstallDir;
                  end;
                  end;

                      Roger,
                      Here is one that I've used with Alpha since V8. Have had no problems with any version of windoze or Alpha so far. Even Win 10.
                      It's not free.

                        Re: Installation Maker not present in Tools, Utilities menu

                        Miles,

                        With some of my "installers" I need to find and remove existing files. Do you know if Deploy Master can do this?

                        Here's my issue: Some of my installers are for A5 utilities and getting updates to work requires removing files that are in various places within Alpha. The most common example is the Addin_Library.list file which is in the A5 AppData\....Installations\xxxxxx folder. Unfortunately, the "xxxxxxx" folder under the installations folder is formed by "Remspec(a5.get_exe_path())" which means (A) they are not necessarily named the same on everyone's computer and (B) I doubt that any installer can do a Remspec() of a folder name. As a result, I have to do a recursive search for a file name then delete any that are found. There can also be multiple Installation folders for each version of A5 and I have to remove the file from each of them. (I know one developer that has moved A5 at least 4 times and there is no way for the installer to tell which location is current!) My utilities are also designed to install to all versions of A5 you may have on your computer which means there can be a lot of folders to look for. (I still have one customer using A5v5 and he refuses to change as long as it is still working - and I can't blame him.)

                        (Hmmm, as I wrote this message it occurred to me that I might be able to write a small A5 app that would run automatically after the install to clean up those files then remove itself - or be removed the first time the main app being installed is run. I'll have to try it.)

                          Re: Installation Maker not present in Tools, Utilities menu

                          Working on this and it may help someone.
                          I am now installing alphav12 from the istaller using the "/s" switch on the command line. Testing has gone well so far.
                          I do an install to temp22 and the run the install from there. It installs into the program files (x86 folder as it should. Then at the very end, I am currently using a .bst file to delete that folder completely. So, the runtime file is just there long enough to get run.
                          I make an exe file of my own that gets placed in th program files a5v12runtime folder to run the app which gets placed on the "c\dive" in a folder.
                          Just testing right now and must test for windows 7 as well. I copy the stsrtup link from my desktop and place it on the users desktop and the bat file can remove(not tested yet) the alpha startup from their desktop.

                          The alpha runtime installer has command line options , although some do not work as expected.
