Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Windows Server 2012 R2 and A5V12 Runtime

I have been through the help files and performed numerous searches of the Message Board. I am in the process of upgrading my A5 database from V5.5 to V12. I have had a few issues with Alpha but they have been taken care of. My current problem is with attempting to deploy the Runtime desktop application via Windows 12 R2 Server. Although all the permissions appear to be set correctly, I am unable to allow a user to open the Runtime without administrative permission. The company hosting the program says the problem has to be with Alpha but from everything I could find, I believe the problem to be a setup or permissions issue.

If anyone has had any experience running A5V12 under Windows Server 2012 I would appreciate your feedback. Finger pointing accomplishes nothing and I need to move forward with the project. The client is getting very itchy to get started with the new features offered by A5V12.

    Thank you - Dick Blanchard

Have you looked into "Preparing a Runtime Installation to use a Shadow Database" in the help files? (search on the word "shadow" and it comes up)
I would think that as long as the permissions were setup properly on the server for access to the data itself.....
A link to 1.) the runtime (for workstation station installation), 2.) a self extracting zip file (containing the autoexec explained above), and a simple text file explaining what to do/how to extract/find the zip file would get the process rolling? ~ That's what I would try anyways, but I have little experience w/ a5 network setups.

Ray is right. Shadowing is putting the kart in front of the horse here. I've also read numerous instances where shadowing benefits are questionable.
Totally seems like a permission related thing. ~ Was 2 am. when I posted this. What was I thinking lol.

It's all about the "framework." (I suppose an "a5-induced" hard drive crash is now in order?)
RELOADED: My current posting activity here merely represents a "Momentary Lapse Of Reason."

      Dick,
If you are hosting a desktop app on a remote server that would involve a terminal service.
You may get some tips from this video on win 12 r2 file and folder permissons, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQNYkUwmV5E
I would not implement A5 shadow database in this scenario (as an aside, nothing to do with permissions)

        Ray,

Thank you for the link. I have viewed the presentation and now have a better understanding of server permissions. I have a level of security where I can look at a lot but can do very little. Based upon what I have seen, it appears the sample users are not properly linked either by user or group to the executable in the C:\program files(x86)\a5v12 Runtime\alpha5.exe file. I will work some more to try to map the users.

A question - Your aside "....., nothing to do with permissions" What do you mean by this? Am I barking up the wrong tree?

        Thank you - Dick

Not at all - simply stating that in a terminal server there is no benefit to using a shadowed database.
