Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Set Dynamic Date Format to Report Field

    Good day,

I have been trying to set the format for a date field in a report dynamically (i.e. in the properties tab if you expand the format option you can set it dynamically). However this is not working, I have set a global variable to the required format and then set that as the dynamic value for the format for the field. Is there something else to configure for this to work or is there a work around. It is essential for the application to have the same date formats throughout front end application and in reports. The user is allowed to select the date format which then sets the __PROTECTED__CLIENTSIDEDATEFORMAT session variable which works for changing the date formats in grids etc. My only problem now is date formats in reports.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

    Best Regards

    Hi Daryl,
    Welcome to the board!

Can we see the syntax of the variable you are setting?

Re: Set Dynamic Date Format to Report Field

Right now i am hard coding the value, but the following is what I am doing

From the dialog that is calling the report

      dim global required_date_format as c = "9-"

I noticed that there is are unique value/s for each format in the list. thus when implemented I would have a lookup to get the corresponding value for the CLIENTSIDEDATFORMAT

Then in the report I declare the global variable

      required_date_format = ""

Then in the properties toolbar I expand the format and set the dynamic setting to use the variable required_date_format

      2016-03-17_11-05-17.png

I have set the field to have a default format of none. I even tried it with the default and still does not work.

      Thanks much

Re: Set Dynamic Date Format to Report Field

If you are using 9 to indicate a digit only, you might want to try 0 (zero) instead. However, I may be wrong...

Re: Set Dynamic Date Format to Report Field

What I used the 9- for is as follows, when setting the date format for the fields

          1- = 12-31-1998
          9- = 31-DEC-98

and so on. So by setting the format to the value 9- then the format for that field should be 31-DEC-98. However this is what I found not to be working.

NB i also tried setting the dd/MM/yyyy etc and that did not work as well.

Re: Set Dynamic Date Format to Report Field

That format is for use with the DTOC() function which returns a character string. See date formats and DTOC()

I really thought someone who actually has v12 would have chimed in by now - I'm afraid I'm not much help.

Re: Set Dynamic Date Format to Report Field

Haven't understood what he is doing, but you can right click on a numeric field in the form/report and set how many decimals you wish to show and it will round for you.
You can also create a calculated field where you can round it yourself and then show the calc field instead of the field itself.

Hope it helps. This is the same from all versions that I know of.

Similar is possible with date fields.

02/03/2019 is 10 characters, but usually you only save 8 hence date field is really 0203219.
You can show this about any way you want.

Re: Set Dynamic Date Format to Report Field

Ok so what I am doing is designing a report. Currently you can manually specify the display format for a date field, which is different from a numeric field. See image below

                2016-03-18_8-22-07.png

However if I create a global variable that would be used to set the dynamic format, the format does not change.

Re: Set Dynamic Date Format to Report Field

Try this for the dynamic expression substituting your var and field name and leave the Format setting blank and set the width of the field on the report to accommodate the larger number of characters:

                  IF(globaldatevarC = "1-",time("MM-DD-YYYY",MYDATEFIELD),time("DD-MON-YYYY",MYDATEFIELD))

Re: Set Dynamic Date Format to Report Field

Thank you very much, I have come up with something similar to this however all the work around so far would be complex as I have more than 100 reports to edit to work dynamically and would have to code if statements for each possible format code. Hoping i dont have to go the manual way so would send this issue as an alpha bug and would see if it can be rectified.

Would keep you all posted on this as this feature is a very powerful feature to have.

                    Thanks much again

                    Happy Coding

Re: Set Dynamic Date Format to Report Field

You may have to mess with the Windows API to set the default. But if Windows is using MM-dd-yyyy format, then leaving the format blank should make that the default.

Note: the format for time() is case sensitive. I tried setting the default field rule for the table but it didn't work there either.
