Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Browse Navigation Fails

I have a maddening issue with a browse losing its filter temporarily then finding it again as I navigate up and down within the browse using the up and down arrows.

It's a simple form, based on a table, no set, with a read-only browse. I open the form as a dialog with a filter for a day's worth of records, normally only 6 records. If I click on the first record in the browse, usually the other records disappear momentarily, then one or two reappear then all if I hit the down arrow. If I continue hitting the down arrow and reach the last record, the same type of flip occurs showing either one or two records (usually the first and last) but restores the filter the next time I hit the down arrow. I've used every technique I can think of to open/filter the form and achieve stability. I've tried OnKey and OnFetch tricks without success. The only way I can get stable browse navigation is with buttons above the browse that use "browse.fetch" commands. So I have "sort of" a fix but it's hardly intuitive.

I vaguely recall others having a similar issue in the past and that there was some kind of fix, but I can't find any messages that seem to relate, so maybe my memory is faulty. Does this sound familiar to anyone else?

I seem to remember that once(I think).
Seems it was an imbedded browse.
If memory serves, I deleted the browse, save, closed & reopened alpha and redid the browse and all was fine.

    Hope this helps

Thanks Dave. I was resisting that route being, I suppose, bloody minded and thinking how much time it had taken to get the various elements looking the way I wanted etc. And not taking into account that I no longer needed to do all that, just recreate. Anyway, I recreated the browse in about 20 minutes and can now reflect on the hours wasted trying to find a fix for the screwed up version. Oh well.

        Just Glad it work Finian.

I had one from a customer that somebody else made 7 years ago and it took me more than a day to get it right.

          Finian,

Did Dave's suggestion fix your navigation problem?

I have the same issue, and deleting and restoring the browse doesn't Solve it for me. Or maybe my attempt to catch the error is wrong and gives me a false positive.

            Re: Browse Navigation Fails

            Hi Tom:

Yes, recreating the browse solved the problem. There were no errors shown when the browse display content changed so there was nothing to trap. BTW, for clarity, this is an embedded browse in case anyone was wondering.

Regarding your issue, you say "restoring" the browse. If that doesn't mean recreating the browse from scratch, then I think that's what you need to do. On rebuilding the browse, the only thing I did differently was to stop working on the browse several times and run it to be sure that the problem was gone. So I created the basic browse, named it to conform to my code, made it read only and then ran the button that launched the form. All was OK so I continued with the browse options, then formatting and color equations testing several times as I went to make sure I didn't introduce the problem as I went on. Have you tried that approach? Also, I later discovered that a second form I had created using a "Save As" from the original problem form, then modified, had inherited the problem in its browse, which wasn't really a surprise. So that browse needed to be recreated as well.

              Thanks Finian,

I did as you outlined, deleted the embedded browse, closed A5V12, then reopened and added a new browse object.

I am still losing the synch with the parent of the set (browse is on the 1:m child). OnRowChange I check to see if the id is the same as the parent ID. Usually it is, but if I work it hard enough, scrolling up and down, it will loss it. Consequently, when I open a related dialog form to edit the record, it is the wrong client.

                Re: Browse Navigation Fails

On opening a second form based on a browse record, I found it safer to have included the key for the record in the browse. You can make them unseen by making the so small. I then read the key from the browse into a variable that is used to open the second form.

I have tons of embedded browses in one app that are mostly showing child records and had problems with the same things, so came up with this method.

                  Dave,

I use the same or similar approach. I capture the recno of the browse, and use it to filter the dialog form. The problem seems to come before opening the dialog to edit, but keeping the embedded browse at the child level, in synch with the parent browse.

                    Re: Browse Navigation Fails

My problems with that come using grand child records. But I do not try to use recno, but rather a key field(connection field). Each table has a connection field to use specifically to connect tables in a set. I don't even want to know what the record numbers are.
parent record is 3 thus browse record is 3 yet child browse may be a32 so called form(whatever kind) is connecting to a child a32 or sometimes 3 and a32 depending the circumstance.
actually I only use numbers( not characters) for key fields where possible so may be easier for me.
Fields seen by users have nothing to do with connectors/keys.

                    adding:
the child record browse should ONLY show children of the parent and any resulting form should be locked from navigation.

I was having a similar issue and the culprit was the on row change event where I was reading a field into a variable. Removed that event and all is well.
