Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    IW Anomaly

    If I open the default browse for a table and then set the interactive window session, the code editor does not 'see' the browse. It does see the default form however. When selecting in the IW it displays as DefaultBrowse_group.

    Try it by using this and tell me if you get something different:

    ?topparent.Name()
    = "Code_Editor"

    When the default form is opened for the table Group, I get

    ?topparent.Name()
    = "DefaultForm_group"

    Is this expected behavior?

    Robin,

    I opened Alphasports.

    I opened the default browse for the Customer table.

    I placed the default browse in design mode.

    I chose Interactive off the TaskList menu.

    I typed ?topparent.name() in the interactive window in my tasklist and pressed enter.

    I got "DefaultBrowse_customer0"

    Are you doing something else ?

      Re: IW Anomaly

      Yes I was, I did not open either the default browse or form in design mode. 'DefaultBrowse_Customer0' looks like a 2nd instance of the browse?

        Agreed. I've always thought the IW runs in its own session, unaware of other open windows. Were you expecting something different?

        Robin, walk us through the steps you took and please take itty-bitty steps. (sorry for the use of technical jargon).

          Re: IW Anomaly

          Fair enough. With the control panel open and my Home form loaded, I opened in this case, a named browse. Then I opened the IW from the control panel and set the session to the browse and typed in the following: (neither the browse nor the form are in design mode)

          ?topparent.name()
          ="Code_Editor"

          then I changed the session to the Home form and this time I got:

          ?topparent.name()
          ="Home"

          then I closed the browse and opened it in edit mode and still got the first response when the session was set to the browse.

            I followed your sequence and get the same results.

            This is the first time, ever, that I explored this part of Alpha Land.

            It looks like a bug. You might submit a formal bug report. I'd describe it this way:

            The "Set Interactive Window Session" menu choice (from the Interactive Menu of the Code Editor) fails when set to an open named browse object."

              Re: IW Anomaly

              Revisiting this issue, I am trying to find a way to address the properies for a default browse so I can add restrictions when my script opens it. Any ideas?

              Edit: Well that was easy, apparently v12 has this fixed.

              Here is the property - from the IW:

              ?DefaultBrowse_appt.restrict_enter
              =.F.

              Now I just need to apply a little Stan magic to get the table name portion into a variable to create a string to evaluate...so I can set it to .T.

                What are you using in your script to open the default browse?
                There can be only one.

                  a5_open_default_browse()

                  putting the table name into a variable is easy, but once the browse is opened, I couldn't make a property change that had any effect.

                      I forgot that it returned a pointer - thanks

                      vtname = "appt"
                      ptr = a5_open_default_browse(vtname)
                      ptr.restrict_enter = .t.
                      ptr.Refresh_Browse() ' this is needed else a ghost appears where the new record line used to be

                      perfect!
