Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Asc Values

    The following code use to work; but quit in v12. What needs changing?

    Code:
    trace.clear()
    dim i as n

    FOR i = 1 TO 255
       trace.writeln(str(i)+"  "+chr(i))
    NEXT
    ui_msg_box("Done","Now go to VIEW - Trace Window to see results.",0+64)
    END
    Thanks,

    ~ Tom

    Works for me but the user tab, instead of being on the left and immediately visible, must be selected.

      I don't see a "user tab". Is that in the Trace Window? How would I add it?

        Re: Asc Values

        Tom,

        Yes, in the Trace Window. I think various tabs appear in response to what there is available to trace. Errors, hook errors, events, etc.

        Are you attempting this in the interactive or is your script similar to what you might do with a button?

        Just for giggles, try it as.

        Code:
        tst = ""
        dim i as n

        FOR i = 1 TO 255
           tst = tst+(str(i)+"  "+chr(i))+crlf()
        NEXT
        save_to_file(tst,"c:\temp\newasc.txt",.T.)
        sys_open("c:\temp\newasc.txt")
        END
        If you don't have a c:\temp directory, make one or change the code, obviously.

            If this is something you reuse from time to time you'll want to delete the previous file first as the code appends each time.

            Code:
            if file.exists("c:\temp\newasc.txt")
            file.remove("c:\temp\newasc.txt")
            end if

            tst = ""
            dim i as n

            FOR i = 1 TO 255
               tst = tst+(str(i)+"  "+chr(i))+crlf()
            NEXT
            save_to_file(tst,"c:\temp\newasc.txt",.T.)
            sys_open("c:\temp\newasc.txt")
            END

                  This makes is easier to read and provides some schooling.
                  Chr(9) is a space and the "mode" function defines 6 columns.
                  Not sure what this does: +chr(9)+if(i<> 9,chr(i),"")

                  Again, Thanks ~ Tom

                    Re: Asc Values

                    Chr(9) is the tab character. That section doesn't add another tab if the character being printed is a tab.

                    Do you know about the quick and dirty a5_ascii_table() for selecting a chr() value? Try ? a5_ascii_table() in the interactive.

                      I have always been a bit annoyed that you can't print the ascii table. So I imported your text file into a spreadsheet. Now I am wondering how would you get a character set for a different font?

                        Re: Asc Values

                        In Excel I would just populate the numeric values as they appear in the text file and leave columns separating them. Then define formulae for the cells adjacent to the numbers

                        =char("cell to the left of me")

                        Then when you change the font for the spreadsheet, the displayed characters change.

                            Excellent point. Just because Alpha offers some utility doesn't mean that it is the best tool for any given task.

                              of course stan and al are right, but if you want to play with the ascii codes and lots of time on hand to kill
