Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

runtime license number asked for on customer install of our software

We have the latest development, runtime & web application Alpha Anywhere v12 and just fired off our software to a fnew client. He installed our software BUT on starting our app, he was ASKED for the runtime license number.

Whatz up? How to correct? Needless to say, we do NOT want this every time a new client installs our software.

What do we need to do?

    Thanks.

I thought I posted to the Desktop group for Alpha Anywhere.

Re: runtime license number asked for on customer install of our software

This leads me to the question, what is the road map here for developers? Can someone suggest an appropriate business model? In other words I buy Alpha and I want to develop for people and I want to create adn sell software developed with AS.
Do I need to develop with my license and then sell a license to them or purchase one for them?

I so wish the server was free - I DO NOT mind paying for a subscription as a developer OR offering an upgrade to their system of a NEW server version that is better if I had a defined cost. I am having trouble understanding how to sell a monthly service for which I am not tied to as the developer so the only thing I can see is I can ONLY develop a system that requires a monthly payment, which if that's the deal then fine but can someone layout for me a business model to follow when considering using Alpha Software as a development platform.
I am so very pleased with Alpha - and I cannot stress that enough!
No other software can compare in my opinion, and I must say I have tried to make a go of it with many others out there!
Selwyn and Richard and Jerry have been awesome to work with and I can tell they LOVE what they are doing!

So anyways, from the desktop to the webside - if someone could give me some pointers on a solid business plan OR just offer some tips on using AS to make money as a developer I am all ears!

Last install, I had the same. Then I realized I had forgotten to include license.key. It happens.
I also neglected to have it place in the registry which is the normal to do for me.

Stan, you are one of the fine contributors to this group BUT please don't assume that searching for 1/2 hour resulted in no posts on my OP our problem. It ALL depends on what you put in the SEARCH field. I would NOT have asked the question or posted anything before first spending the time to look.

And I did spend TIME looking "resource of previously answered questions".....you got us pointed in the RIGHT direction.

Thank you for pointing us to this previous thread. Appreciated.

Maybe I just have the knack.

                I searched for

                runtime license number

and the post I quoted was the third one down.

Lots of people get tied up with license.key and license key.txt.
It's a txt file, but with a specific extension. KEY not Txt.

Steve is a fine resource for us all & his many contributions are appreciated. He has magic fingers!!!

I just noticed that my v12 runtime did not contain the file license.key though I can open & use it without having to enter a license #. It is from this runtime that our app install exe comes from and would this cause our problem. I do have the license.key file. To fix our problem is it "only" necessary to copy this file into the a5 v12 runtime directory at our client? once again, thanks for the help.

Just copy the license.key file into the folder? Yes
Check the file to be sure it has the correct number in it.
