Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Variable as a report filter

    I wish to use a character variable as a report filter, so that I can manipulate this for a number of reports.
    If I set a global variable vREPORTFILTER = "field1='YES'" and the use VREPOPRTFILTER as the filter it fails, where am I going wrong?
    Thanks

    Re: Variable as a report filter

    Terry,

    Try

    vREPORTFILTER = "field1="+chr(34)+"YES"+chr(34)

    This will embed the value in double quotes.

      Re: Variable as a report filter

      you should be able to use
      Code:
      vREPORTFILTER = "field1 = \"YES\""
      should work.

        Re: Variable as a report filter

        vREPORTFILTER = "field1='YES'"
        Should be perfectly fine. You say when you use it, it fails.

        How do you try to use it and how does it fail?

            If you are trying to put

            vReportfilter

            in the filter box in the Select Records dialog of a report design, it won't work.

            "field1='YES'"
            is a character string, not an expression that evaluates to a logical value necessary to be a filter.

            field1="YES"
            is an expression that evaluates to a logical value.

            You can use vReportfilter like

            report.print("Customer Information", vreportfilter, "lastname")

            because report.print() is expecting the second parameter to be a quoted filter expression.

              Re: Variable as a report filter

              I have finally got back to this!
              My report(s) have the following "Select Records" filter

              case(vINSURERSFILTER="All",Insurer<>"",vINSURERSFILTER="AIG and Chartis",word(Insurer,1)="AIG".OR.word(Insurer,1)="Chartis",vINSURERSFILTER="ARGO",word(Insurer,1)="ARGO",vINSURERSFILTER="BRIT",word(Insurer,1)="BRIT",vINSURERSFILTER="Zurich",word(Insurer,1)="ZURICH").AND.(case(vLOSSTYPEFILTER="All",Losstype<>"",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="All ex Liability",Losstype<>"EMP INJURY".AND.Losstype<>"TP INJURY".AND.Losstype<>"TP PTY DAM",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="All ex Storm & Flood",Losstype<>"STORM - FLOOD".AND.Losstype<>"STORM - NOT FLOOD",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="EL only",Losstype="EMP INJURY",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="Glass only",Losstype="GLASS",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="Liability only",Losstype="EMP INJURY".OR.Losstype="TP INJURY".OR.Losstype="TP PTY DAM",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="PL only",Losstype="TP INJURY".OR.Losstype="TP PTY DAM",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="Storm & Flood only",Losstype="STORM - FLOOD".OR.Losstype="STORM - NOT FLOOD",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="Theft only",Losstype="THEFT").OR.Losstype="")

              how do I convert this to a variable that can be used as the second parameter of the report.print() function.
              Thanks

                Re: Variable as a report filter

                The filter in report.print() must be a quoted string. In this instance there are multiple internal quotes which would then need to be "escaped" with the backslash character.

                "case(vINSURERSFILTER="All",Insurer<>"",vINSURERSFILTER="AIG and Chartis",word(Insurer,1)="AIG" .or........................................."

                The above would be needed to insert the whole string into report.print().

                You could also

                myfilter = case(vINSURERSFILTER="All",Insurer<>"",vINSURERSFILTER="AIG and Chartis",word(Insurer,1)="AIG".OR.word(Insurer,1)="Chartis",vINSURERSFILTER="ARGO",word(Insurer,1)="ARGO",vINSURERSFILTER="BRIT",word(Insurer,1)="BRIT",vINSURERSFILTER="Zurich",word(Insurer,1)="ZURICH").AND.(case(vLOSSTYPEFILTER="All",Losstype<>"",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="All ex Liability",Losstype<>"EMP INJURY".AND.Losstype<>"TP INJURY".AND.Losstype<>"TP PTY DAM",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="All ex Storm & Flood",Losstype<>"STORM - FLOOD".AND.Losstype<>"STORM - NOT FLOOD",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="EL only",Losstype="EMP INJURY",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="Glass only",Losstype="GLASS",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="Liability only",Losstype="EMP INJURY".OR.Losstype="TP INJURY".OR.Losstype="TP PTY DAM",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="PL only",Losstype="TP INJURY".OR.Losstype="TP PTY DAM",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="Storm & Flood only",Losstype="STORM - FLOOD".OR.Losstype="STORM - NOT FLOOD",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="Theft only",Losstype="THEFT").OR.Losstype="")

                immediately prior to

                report.print(reportname, myfilter,........)

                  it may be possible to convert the whole thing to a single string and then pass it to the report.print function like
                  Code:
                  dim filterStr as c
                  filterStr = <<%str%
                  case(vINSURERSFILTER="All",Insurer<>"",vINSURERSFILTER="AIG and Chartis",word(Insurer,1)="AIG".OR.word(Insurer,1)="Chartis",vINSURERSFILTER="ARGO",word(Insurer,1)="ARGO",vINSURERSFILTER="BRIT",word(Insurer,1)="BRIT",vINSURERSFILTER="Zurich",word(Insurer,1)="ZURICH").AND.(case(vLOSSTYPEFILTER="All",Losstype<>"",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="All ex Liability",Losstype<>"EMP INJURY".AND.Losstype<>"TP INJURY".AND.Losstype<>"TP PTY DAM",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="All ex Storm & Flood",Losstype<>"STORM - FLOOD".AND.Losstype<>"STORM - NOT FLOOD",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="EL only",Losstype="EMP INJURY",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="Glass only",Losstype="GLASS",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="Liability only",Losstype="EMP INJURY".OR.Losstype="TP INJURY".OR.Losstype="TP PTY DAM",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="PL only",Losstype="TP INJURY".OR.Losstype="TP PTY DAM",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="Storm & Flood only",Losstype="STORM - FLOOD".OR.Losstype="STORM - NOT FLOOD",vLOSSTYPEFILTER="Theft only",Losstype="THEFT").OR.Losstype="")
                  %str%
                  then
                  report.print(reportName, myFilter, filterStr)

                  at the least this will help the tedious job of escaping the quotes.
