Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Group by week

    In a report, I want to group by week, but my week must be Saturday -> Friday. The date field is spdate. So week(spdate) won't work since it is based on Sun through Saturday. I've been trying the mod function without success.

    Suggestions please.

    Borrowing from an old post of Ira's.

    Break on

    if(dow(datefield)=7,datefield-DOW(datefield)+7,datefield-DOW(datefield))

    at least I think I have that right.

        Sorry, I just not getting my head around this calculation.
        The Below breaks on Saturday
        if(dow(datefield)=7,datefield-DOW(datefield)+7,datefield-DOW(datefield))

        How would I change it to break on Wednesday? or Thursday or Sunday?

        Thanks

          Re: Group by week

          For whatever day you want to appear as the start of the week in the report, make the group break expression

          if(dow(datefield)>=dow_value,datefield-DOW(datefield)+7,datefield-DOW(datefield))

          for example Thursday's dow_value is 5. To make the report break Thursday through Wednesday

          if(dow(datefield)>=5,datefield-DOW(datefield)+7,datefield-DOW(datefield))

          Based on the normal Alpha dow() function yielding 1 for Sunday through 7 for Saturday, the expression

          datefield-DOW(datefield) will return the same date (the previous Sunday's date) for all dates in a given Sun-Sat week so datefield-DOW(datefield)+7 "pushes" all values with a true dow(datefield)>=5 into the week after they would normally fall.

            Re: Group by week

            Nope. Remember I'm trying to create a report that breaks on "Saturday" for example. Then this works;

            if(dow(datefield)=7,datefield-DOW(datefield)+7,datefield-DOW(datefield)

            Why is it only working for dow=7, if I change it to any other number, it doesn't work!

            I'd like to use a variable, dow_value, so users could use any first day of week, but I can't get it to work, with any other date than a Saturday date.

              Hi Tom,
              Not to butt in... but is this for a payroll app? Because if it is, you might need a week number field that is related to the date paid; in which case you could use a calc to break on that.

                Hi Robin - thanks for dropping in. No, this isn't a payroll app. I'm trying to document services provided per week.

                  I suggested dow(datefield)>=dow_value, note the >=.

                  I tested and it seems to work here.

                    May be this exp

                    Code:
                    'get Wednesday
                    vThisWed = datefield-DOW(datefield)+4		'date - 6 + 4 = get the Wednesday(*#4)
                    vLastWed = datefield-DOW(datefield)-(7-4)	'date - 6 - 3 = week before	(7 days week - sun, mon,tue = wed)
                    showvar("1st: "+vThisWed+" 2nd: "+vLastWed)

                      Re: Group by week

                      try this and see if okay with you:
                      dim day as c
                      day = "day_value"
                      group expression
                      week(date_field - dow(date_field) - (7-day_number(day_value)))

                      edit:
                      sorry the calculation needs fine tuning.
                      will post back.

                        Thanks for taking a look Gandhi.

                        I have a table with as many as 4 months of data, that I need to group by week. I can control the Beginning Date and Ending date fo the report, so the week should group by the dow(Beginning date).

                        thanks again.

                          week(day_field - day_number(day_value) should work.
                          i tested with only two dates seems ok.

                            Re: Group by week

                            here is a function I wrote that seems to calculate a week based on the day provided:
                            Code:
                            FUNCTION myWeek AS N (d1 AS D, day AS C )
                            	dim dayNumber as n
                            	dayNumber = day_number(day)
                            	dim newD1 as d
                            	if dow(d1) < dayNumber then
                            	newD1 = d1-(dow(d1))-(7-dayNumber)
                            	else
                            	newD1 = d1 - ((dow(d1)-dayNumber))
                            	end if
                            	myWeek = week(newD1)
                            END FUNCTION
                            Code:
                            dim d1 as d
                            d1 = date()
                            ?week(d1)
                            = 47

                            ?myWeek(d1,"tuesday" )
                            = 47

                            ?myWeek(d1, "wednesday")
                            = 46
                            basically it pushes the date back to the day previous week or this week based on the day of the week.
                            hope this works.

                            if you must use single line of code than the function then
                            Code:
                            week(if (dow(date_field) < day_number(day_value),date()-(dow(date_field))-(7-day_number(day_value)),date_field-(dow(date_field)-(7-day_number(day_value)))))
                            should also work
                            Code:
                            dim date_field as d
                            date_field = {11/15/2016}
                            dim day_value as c
                            day_value = "wednesday"
                            ?week(if (dow(date_field) < day_number(day_value),date()-(dow(date_field))-(7-day_number(day_value)),date_field-(dow(date_field)-(7-day_number(day_value)))))
                            = 46

                            day_value = "monday"
                            ?week(if (dow(date_field) < day_number(day_value),date()-(dow(date_field))-(7-day_number(day_value)),date_field-(dow(date_field)-(7-day_number(day_value)))))
                            = 47
