Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Topparent confusion?

I sent this in as a bug to Alpha and have not heard back yet ..... just wanted to put out to the forum to see if others have had this happen to them ....

When opening forms from certain controls ..... certain controls on the new form do not recognize "topparent" correctly. I have attached a test db to help illustrate ...

    Unzip TestDB
    Open TestDB

    Scenario #1:
    Run form ... form2
Click on button "form1" in Browse control (this should open form1)
From Form1, click on "Close (Hyperlink)"
BUG --- > Form1 should close, but form2 closes instead .... the code in the hyperlink executes topparent.close() .... if you debug the hyperlink code, you can see that it thinks that topparent is form2.

    Scenario #2:
    Run form ... form2
Click on button "form1" in Browse control (this should open form1)
From Form1, click on "Close (Button)"
Form1 closes correctly with the same code used in scenario #1

This just started happening as I was testing an app that is built in 10.5 build 4138 and I was looking to move to latest release. Both above scenarios worked fine in 10.5 ... Alpha Anywhere introduced a bug somewhere .... pretty scary that the control doesn't know what form its on ....

      Re: Topparent confusion?

Andrew .... thanks for checking out. I should have mentioned in the post ... my version is the latest ....
Alpha Anywhere Version (Registered): 12 v4.3.1
Compiler: Microsoft C Compiler version 1800
      Build: 3962
      Addins: 4772

Good to know that it looks like this is recent ... maybe it can be fixed. Like I said in prev post, this worked in 10.5 as well.

After a little more digging, this seems to be only an issue with embedded dialog type controls .... I could be wrong and it could be bigger, but the controls I have seen this happen with are embedded dialog based. In my 10.5 app, I control closing of all my window with a Hyperlink Supercontrol (which is embedded dialog) that simpy issues a topparent.close() ... everything works great!! In latest release of Alpha, depending on how the form is opened, the Close Hyperlink closes the wrong form .... this would cause major issues if I upgraded to the latest release.

And check this debug screenshot out .... current_object() definitely shows that the dialog belongs to "form1", but for some reason topparent thinks its "form2" ... ??

Andrew ..... I installed your release and tested ... as you said .... works like a charm .... bug must have been introduced in a release after.

In situations like these I have found Alpha to be very responsive in resolving it by next patch; let us know what you hear back from them.

                Re: Topparent confusion?

Update: Received email from Alpha that this would be fixed in next pre-release build. Hopefully this helps people with some weird stuff happening related to info on the form for an object. Kinda surprised that this didn't bubble up sooner since it was introduced in the first 4.0 release .... kinda a big thing when an object doesn't even know the form that its on. Alpha also said that the fix was around embedded dialogs type controls .... maybe people don't use much ... :)
