Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Insert Records then print

    How would I go about writing a code to insert 100 records and then print the inserted records using a layout? I work at a school and I need to do this in order to print admission applications but with each application having a unique ID number. I am normally use to developing web applications and I have a clear idea of how to do this using sql, but my applications system is still using native dbf tables. Please help.

    Heres what I think the xbasic should look like

    Code:
    'Open the table that you want to update...
    dim tbl as p
    dim Count as n
    dim AddNum as n
    Count = 0
    AddNum = 1

    tbl = table.open("app requests",FILE_RW_SHARED)

    If Count < 100 then
    	'Loop through this code
    	'Add new record and set count until count reaches 100

             tbl.enter_begin()
             tbl.CRAFT = "Laborers"
             tbl.enter_end(.t.)
             Count = Count + AddNum
    else
    	'stop code from looping and display a box saying Process is complete
    end if
    tbl.close()

      this way

      dim i as n
      for i = 1 to 100
               tbl.enter_begin()
               tbl.CRAFT = "Laborers"
               tbl.enter_end(.t.)

        Is there anything you don't know Gandhi, thank you for that. Now how would I print the records which were just inserted? How do i get the range of IDs that were entered for printing?

        I want it to send a print job for all the records that were just inserted after the loop through has finished, then show a message box once the entire operation has completed.

          Re: Insert Records then print

          None of the code shown creates an id that I can see unless your dbf has an id auto increment field. "Print jobs" for dbf tables are reports. You create a report which contains the fields from the dbf you want to show on the report and filter for the records you want to show on the report.

          If you actually have a table named app requests, change it to app_requests or apprequests or similar. Alpha desktop abhors a vacuum.

            that would require to get the intial count before the script runs
            something like
            dim total_records as n
            total_records = tbl.records_get() -- i do not know spaces are good idea, somebody will alert you on that.
            then run your script
            then when ready to print
            you will
            for i = total_records to total_records + 100
            do the printing
            next i

            something like that

            edit:
            see stan pointed that out.

            edit2: corrected the records get

              For a report on a single dbf with no deleted records, the most recently added 100 records can be filtered for with

              between(recno(),table.current().records_get()-99,table.current().records_get())

                Thank you for all your inputs, here is what I was able to create from your inputs:

                Code:
                'Date Created: 13-Apr-2017 07:12:19 AM
                'Last Updated: 13-Apr-2017 07:13:27 AM
                'Created By  : ivan
                'Updated By  : ivan

                tbl = table.open("app requests",FILE_RW_SHARED)

                	dim i as n
                	for i = 1 to 5
                         tbl.enter_begin()
                         tbl.CRAFT = "Laborers"
                         tbl.enter_end(.t.)
                	next i
                tbl.close()

                'Print a report, label, letter, form or browse layout. You can specify which records to print.

                query.filter = "between(recno(),table.current(\"app requests\").records_get()-4,table.current().records_get())"
                query.order = "recno()"

                :Letter.Print("APP_REQ_APPLICATION_BLAN",query.filter,query.order)

                msgbox("RESULT", "All done")
                The ID field is auto-increment. I brought the number of records entered down to 5 just to test its operation.
                However, when I try to print I get an invalid filter expression. Is the filter expression missing parameters that I am not seeing?

                  I know that using blank spaces for a table is not good, I've been a hesitant to change it as I am planning to move this into sql anyway. I had an immediate need to create this quick operation while I move this into sql. I inherited this system from the previous DBA.

                    when you say table.current it is referring to the open table, you do not need another specification
                    query.filter = "between(recno(),table.current().records_get()-4,table.current().records_get())"
                    should do well.
