Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Accessing AA .dbf files from a .net console application

    I have a need to generate a report from a .net console application, and want to pull from our Alpha Anywhere .dbf files for some of the data. I thought I should be able to use the standard Jet database engine, like the code below. I'm getting an "external table is not in the correct format" error when trying to fill my dataset. Does anyone have any experience doing this and know what is the best practices way of reading from the .dbf files from a .net app? Here is my simple code snippet:

    string connectionString = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Data Source=C:\\myPath; Extended Properties=DBASE IV;";
    using (OleDbConnection conn = new OleDbConnection(connectionString))
    {
    conn.Open();
    var sql = "select * from myTable";
    OleDbDataAdapter da = new OleDbDataAdapter(sql, conn);

    DataSet ds = new DataSet();
    da.Fill(ds);
    }

      Steve,
      These work. Pretty self explanatory. Be careful how many objects you include in the data set. I use VS 2013 and anything more that 20 locks it up (VS).

        Re: Accessing AA .dbf files from a .net console application

        Thanks...those are great examples.

        After a little more testing, the issue seems to be with the JPEG image column that I have in the table. The data adapter fills fine when there are no image columns in the table, but doesn't seem to be able to handle the image column without the "external table is not in the expected format" error. Have you been successful working with image columns? I can default to the image column pointing to the filename of the image, but wanted to pull the image straight from the database.

        Thanks again,
        Steve

          Steve,

          What do you mean by "pull the images straight from the database.?" Do you want to view them from another database. (If so which one) Simply view them on a screen.(If so which app to view them). Save them to a different format, so on and so on.

          Regards

            I want to run a .Net console application, read the records from the .dbf file, and generate a PDF file from the records. I'm able to connect to the .dbf file as long as there are no image fields in the table, but when there are image fields in the table I'm unable to connect to the .dbf file.

              Steve,
              If what your wanting to do is generate a pdf file from the A5 db why do you not create a report in A5 (with the data and images). Save it to a pdf (in A5) file and view it with what ever pdf viewer you want.
