Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Outlook Import

    Hello

    Has any one ever tried to copy and paste an Outlook message into a browse.

    One of our applications stores enquiries based on a set. Customer details as parent and enquiry as child.

    A customer has asked whether it would be possible to copy an Outlook message and paste it directly into the child.

    It would eliminate the tedium of having to save the Outlook message in the folder of the set, and then go and add it as a record to the browse.

    Classic example of where drag and drop would be the ideal solution, but...

    Thank you for your help. It is much appreciated.

    Kind regards

    Re: Outlook Import

    If you have a memo field in the child table you can click-drag-copy the Outlook message from the Outlook window and paste into the memo field in a browse.
    There can be only one.

      Thanks Stan for your prompt reply.

      One of the problems is that often the Outlook message will have attached drawings.

      Kind regards

        Alpha dbf's don't have a field type that will allow you to store documents. If you mean you want to copy an Outlook message and its attachments and put that into an Alpha dbf table field, I don't believe you're going to have any luck.

          Have you looked at the Alpha email reader that can retrieve emails and use xbasic to process the email and it's attachments?

            >>Has any one ever tried to copy and paste an Outlook message into a browse.

            You can use OLE automation to read the text of any Outlook folder and/or message. You can retrieve the "Outlook fields" (sender, to, subject, body, etc. as text) and then programmatically create the appropriate record in your Alpha table with the information from the Outlook email. I do this in several apps and it works quite nicely.

            Some sample code to get you started is below.

            'Create Pointer to Outloop
            DIM objOutlook as P
            objOutlook = ole.create("Outlook.Application")

            'BEGIN CODE 02/06/2013 to check which version of Outlook user is running. If user is running prior to Outlook 2010 then the value of the variable will be less than 14
            'Outlook 2010="14.0.0.6126"
            DIM vOutlookVersion as C
            vOutlookVersion=objOutlook.version
            vOutlookVersion=substr(vOutlookVersion,1,2)

            'Create the namespace object
            ole_namespace = objoutlook.GetNameSpace("MAPI")

            There is quite a bit of information about OLE at Microsoft MSDN on everything you can retrieve. If you want a more complete example, let me know and I can put something together.

            Regards,

            Jeff

              Hi Jeff

              What about writing the attachments to another table?

              Kind regards

                Hi Alex,

                I have never messed with the attachments...but I know that option exists using OLE. I have been retrieving the sender, subject, body, etc. and writing that data to fields in a table. As far as the attachments go, I think I would save the attachment off to a specified structured directory system and then record that path in a character field in a table and then use sys_open() to use the default Windows app to open the file from inside of Alpha.

                Regards,
                Jeff
