Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

If you're not dealing with sensitive information you can right click on the set name in the control panel and choose Zip. Attach the result file to a post here or you can email it to me.

I tried running the update for my 2017 year and it is not working. I did what you said. I put field as year, expression as alltrim(str(Year)) = "". The year field is not in the parent database, it is only in the child database. I have no idea what to do now.

Ok. I will check it out. It looks like it is visible in the child but it is missing in several records in the parent. Thanks so much for your help today! It is at the end of my workday. I may need your help again tomorrow. lol

Sorry, I don't know what you mean. Did you examine the default browse for the child table and verify that 2017 was placed in the proper field in the appropriate records? When you view your form containing the browse is the year field visible in the browse?

Do you have the same field in the parent table? If so you will have to run a similar update on the parent table.

I don't know why the field would need to be in both but if that's the way you designed it.............

I ran the operation on the child database but it is still not showing in my Parent database.

    Ok, back to the beginning.

You have tables in a set. One of the child tables has a field for year where some of the records are blank for that field? The records where the year field is blank should have 2017 in the year field?

You need to design and run the update operation for that table only.

Thanks Stan. Unfortunately this is not working either. I forget to say that I am working within a set & I can not access the year field when I try to update the records.

    Re: Control Browse

If the field you are updating is numeric then the update expression would be 2017 (unquoted) and the condition would be alltrim(str(your_field_being_updated)) = "". I was assuming it was character.

I have tried the update operation and I get an error: Variable update.expr1 expression - Argument is incorrect data type. It tells me it is not the correct data type. It is recognizing the year as a numeric field. What condition can I use for a numeric expression to show the year is blank?

control_browse1 is just the object name. It is no different than any other browse and the name can be changed to suit in the object properties should you wish.

There is an operation, separate from a post operation, called an update operation.

    https://www.alphasoftware.com/docume...te_Builder.gif

You can specify the field to update, the expression ("2017"), and the condition alltrim(your_field_being_updated) = ""

    Re: Control Browse

I have a control browse with years as data. I have to make sure each record has 2017 in it. I am having to enter each one separately. I was wondering if I can do an update such as a post based on records that do not show 2017 in them.

You can edit/ add/delete records on a browse from the control panel if permissions are not modified. Is that what you are asking?

I'm not familiar with a control browse. Do you mean a browse on a form whose object name is something like "control_browse1"?
