Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Post operation question

I am trying to create a post operation and am unable to set the Transaction table. I have tried this on different versions of Alpha from A5V5 to A5V12 desktop, and on different computers, and it is always the same. Using the Genie I can select the Master Table but the table I want for the Transaction Table is not listed on the drop down. The operation does not work if I type the table name in - the table is not found when I try to run the Post. I assume there is a logical reason why this does not work, but I can't figure it out.

Just for giggles, I tried reversing the tables, taking the table I want to use as the Transaction Table and setting it as the Master Table. The other table shows in the dropdown and I can set it as the Transaction Table and create a Post which will run. The two tables are not part of the same set. Most of the field names are the same, by design, to make it easier to create the operation. I ran into a similar problem when a form based on one of the tables was open, but everything is closed when I try to create this post.

I have spent several days on this and would appreciate any help so I might move on to the next problem.

    Re: Post operation question

If your table doesn't appear in the genie's table list, there should be the option at the top for more tables. This will open an explorer window to select a table from any location.

It sounds a bit deeper than that Robin.
@Richard. Have you ever done a Post operation before?
Not patronising, some people never use the function.

Actually I think Robin is spot on and didn't post the same answer because she was faster in her response than I. (Kinda like Stan...)

I run into this all the time.

          Re: Post operation question

I just checked two databases with many tables and it appears the genie dropdown is limited to 49 table names in addidtion to <More Files...>. I cannot discern how the ones that appear are chosen. I see some recently added tables as well as some that have been part of the database for a while.
          There can be only one.

            Re: Post operation question

Yes, I have done a few posts, most recently last week.
I have two tables which have many identical field names for the purpose of transferring data. Table one tracks all components and assigns a record number (auto increment) to all new records. The Record Number is critical to several reports and searches. I have a second table, table 2, which is the primary table of a set. Currently I enter data directly to table 1 if it is Standard data. If the data is Special data, it is entered into the parent, table 2, or child table of the set. I then Append the data to Table 1, where it is assigned a record number. I then Post the Record Number back to table 2.
What I am trying to do is Post any changes to the data in Table 2 to the record in Table 1. Per my original post, I am not able to create the Post. I have looked at Robin's message and Yes I can find the table per the message. I have not yet had time to create the Post and planned to do this tomorrow.
I have been playing with Alpha Software since Version 3, I guess about 25 years or so. I haven't kept up with all the changes over the years, mostly because of my "Day Job". I am sure the Guru's out there have a better way to do this. I don't know why this won't work and anything else is probably beyond my capabilities.
I have a subscription to Alpha Anywhere and have the latest Build/Version. My program is written for the Desktop Version.

              Re: Post operation question

I have run into this MANY times, not just with post operations. When the table doesn't appear in the drop-down, I just select "more tables" and find my table that way. I think, more times than not, I don't find my transaction table in the drop-down, but using the "more tables" option, I am able to successfully create the operation.

I want to thank all who replied. Robin's response worked just fine. Interesting is Stan's post. I checked my table drop down and have only 49 tables listed while I have 94 tables in my database. Depending on what table I am trying to perform an operation on, the list varies. I cannot discern a relationship between the tables listed and the table operation.
Thank you again for the support. This is one I will not forget.

But to be honest, there are not too many funnies like that.
