Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    doing appends with issues

Probably the reason I hate using field rules:
Warning [1]: Error(s) opening rules for field: FILE_NUM
Warning [2]: Error adding calculated rule to database engine.
Warning [3]: Error(s) opening rules for field: USER_C
Warning [4]: Error adding calculated rule to database engine.
Warning [5]: Error(s) opening rules for field: USER_C
Warning [6]: Error parsing 'calc' rules expression.
    Trace window errors:
I deduced it was to do with field rules, so individually deleted all field rules since they are not needed, then deleted all rules with no joy.
    Still getting the errors.
    Any help appreciated.

    Dave,

Did you update the dictionary after?

    Tom

--- did you redefine the calculated fields to be user entered?

        Tried it like this:
        Code:
        DICTIONARY.UPDATE("C:\mgsappend\insp.DDD")
        to no avail
It seems I can make them go away, but they soon come back. Like they a lurkining in a hidden alcove.
Have deleted the tables, recreated them and issue comes right back.
Throws the errors on append operations or when done as a udf.

          Re: doing appends with issues

After some period of time spent beating my head against a wall I generally feel better when I stop.

Why not create a new table with the same structure, append the records to it, delete the original, rename the new table to the same as the old.
          There can be only one.

Done it twice now to no avail. Even replaced the table(actually 3 tables) with same from another app and it persists.

Have you tried deleting the fields from the table that the errors are being generated. saving the table. Closing and reopening the app and seeing if the errors persist?

                Re: doing appends with issues

Dave, I just read your response.

if the fields are calculated fields, and they are being updated in the events, that might be the problem. Calculated fields have to be defined in the "Calculated field expression" on the "fields type" tab. Calculated fields cannot be updated except by that expression. Change the field type to "User entered", and then the event script should work.

Time to post a sample table so we can see what is going on.

I really wish I could post an example.
Too large, even broken out, and too filled with secret info to post this and unable to duplicate with new tables.
Going to try copying just the dbf and rpt files into a folder from the old app and see if that helps or even works. Seems the rules get repopulated on the append and then throws the errors.

None of the fields are anything other than "User entered"
Have worked it out so the 3 times the errors show up, The client will just click ok and the appends do continue. It would be horrible if they had to do this daily, but it will be once or maybe twice and done for good.

Thanks to all for the input!

                        Re: doing appends with issues

I had another look at this Dave.
In V11, when I run an Append, I don't get the Field Rules as well, just the data.
                        Suggestion;
Duplicate the table but leave out the Field Rules, then use Append to get the data from the Duplicated table - which won't have any Field Rules, into the table you want.
When I tried this in V12 - a really old version - I don't get the Field Rules being added to the table, just the records.

Have you tried running the Append silently? That may get rid on the nags.

ted, the appends are run from udf's and are silent.
I have worked it out with client and they are ok with it. So, no more problem. I believe it is a bug, but not going to worry about it now.

                              To maybe help others:
I have simplified the tables down to around 70 of which around 65 have to use the append. 2 very large tables were expanded to 3 or four to drop the sizes and keep under the 2 gig limit for more years of life. If done right, the memo files are also split up. Eliminated images inside the memo files and it really helped the file sizes. Most done with the append operations. They run much faster in UDF's. Also found that using xbasic to copy the folder from the server to a local drive enhanced the speed greatly. Saved over 30 minutes on the appends. Then delete the temp folder.
I did find out that if one tries to use tables with no support files, it will work, but fields over 10 will be truncated to 10.
