Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha v12 Desktop & Server

I will shortly be converting my v11 Runtime system to v12 and want to retain the existing Desktop applications as is. I do, however, want to install mobile applications so that both runtime and web apps have concurrent access to the database. I have spent some time searching the forum but cannot find any threads that help.
I would like to know if this scenario is possible and if so if there is documentation available that would help me proceed with my project.
    Thank you for you help.

I believe that you can only do mobile apps with sql data bases. So unless you have your desktop using sql you might need to convert that to sql. Hopefully I am wrong on this, since that is what is holding me back from doing a mobile app.

Really depends whether you plan to use the mobile phone in off line mode, or something like a tablet connected to an internet service.
Mobile with off line capability will require something like SQLITE on the phone.
Web access doesn't necessarily require SQL, as there are a few options for storing and retrieving data nowadays, however it is the easiest.
Upscaling your app to SQL is fairly easy as there is a built in feature which does it for you. You can practice on your own PC before subscribing to a Hosting company.
I am working on a desktop app with SQL tables to allow for access by DT, Mobile and Web. My bit is the DT.

Re: Alpha v12 Desktop & Server

        Hi Roger,

I currently have 5 Desktop/WEB apps running. The desktop apps are running using A5V11 and the WEB apps are running using A5V12. I'm using DBF file structures. The WEB apps have been designed to use any type of mobile device. The only thing common between the two types of applications are the DBF tables. Otherwise, the runtime and the WEB app are totally independent of each other.

In my mind, you can think of the WEB side as building xDialogs to interact with the data. I've stayed with the DBF files as it would have been a nightmare to convert the desktop app from DBF to some form of SQL. So far, the DBF files have been working fine with the WEB apps.

My WEB apps are not designed for the general public but strictly for use by company employees for data entry throughout the day. Some employees use the desktop and others are using their mobile devices. We have a satellite operation in Florida and mobile operations in New England.

        Ron

I just wanted to add that we are using a local area network for some computers, some people are accessing the data using RDP and then we have a dedicated computer hosting the WEB application server. Very low budget but so far has been reliable and meeting our needs.

Do have off line capability Ron?
And the WAS is accessing vanilla DBF tables?
          If so, that is cool!

We're not using off line. I don't know if we can as I haven't even explored that capability.
We're using the native Alpha 5 DBF files.

Our desktop app is 13 years old and is still being developed to meet our everyday needs.
We're using the WEB to help us where data entry is required while off site and internet access is available.

Well please allow me to congratulate you. Excellent! I was not aware DBF worked in the WAS.
This opens up a whole new set of opportunities where SQL performance may be an issue.
Off line is not as important IMHO as it once was. In the UK we have hotspots almost everywhere.
