Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Video : Passing Javascript variables to child windows

    Here's a new instructional video that shows how to pass Javascript variables from a parent grid to it's children.

    Here we are passing information from a read only parent grid to a linked grid with a detail view.

      Bob,

      Thanks, that's a great technique to pass human readable info to the pop-up window. I've implemented it and was able to eliminate using a view, hidden fields and a freeform edit just to carry this info forward. I'm sure I will use it often.

      It's a great example of using the "right tool for the job".

        Pat,

        Remember, you can also popluate fields in a child grid with this technique if you want.

        Code:
        //Set LNAME field to Javascript var parent.v_lname

        {grid.object}._setValue('G','LNAME',{grid.rowNumber},parent.v_lname);

            Bob,

            Why don't you consider putting together some Alpha V10 ajax / javascript course material. Explaining the concepts, basics, examples right through the advanced stuff. Via Jing or otherwise.

            I'm sure a lot would be willing to pay reasonably for getting some of the insights you already seem to have with the new V10 ajax / javascript possibilities.

            Otherwise: Keep up the great entries! Very refreshing.

            Thanks, Ron

              I'm thinking of doing something like :

              http://www.peepcode.com

              for some more detailed stuff

              and something like:

              http://www.gotoandlearn.com

              for the quick 4 to 5 minute videos.

              These are a few of my favorite instructional sites.

                  I was primarily referring to the format they use.

                  I suppose the subjects could include a wide variety of topics relating to Alpha V10. Some that come to mind are:
                  • Javascript techniques/tips
                  • Javascript library integration
                  • SQL, stored procedures, triggers, etc.
                  • XBasic techniques/tips
                  • Mashups
                  • Flash/Flex Integration
                  • CSS techniques/tips
                  • HTML techniques/tips
                  • Reporting techniques/tips

                  Geez .. when you list it out, there really is a LOT to learn and believe me I NEVER stop learning!

                    Is there a way to put the contents of a passed in javascript variable into an A5 session variable?

                      Re: Video : Passing Javascript variables to child windows

                      Bob,
                      I got frustrated on taking your example and trying to use it to place the variable value in a field (in an add only child grid). I am assuming this goes in the child's grid ongridrender event. Is their additional code needed? Am I putting the code in the right place?

                      //Set LNAME field to Javascript var parent.v_lname

                      {grid.object}._setValue('G','LNAME',{grid.rowNumber},parent.v_lname);
                      If you could finish your example, by showing how to fill in a field in the child grid with the value of the variable it would be appreciated.
                      Tks

                        Re: Video : Passing Javascript variables to child windows

                        Dave helped me out with the code below that grabs the variable created in Bob's video and flings it into a the name field which is based on a dummy field in the table.

                        Dave put the example in a simple database, it is posted with the rest of the story at http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ad.php?t=92073

                        This is for an add only grid and is placed in the ongridrendor javascript system event. (Found in grid properties).
                        The first line that begins with // is a comment showing an alternate way of doing the same thing.

                        //$('TABLE_ORDER_VUPH.V.R-1.DUMMY').value = parent.v_name;
                        $('{grid.componentName}.V.R-1.DUMMY').value = parent.v_name;

                          Re: Video : Passing Javascript variables to child windows

                          I am trying to use this same method to set a session variable in a grid javascript - row event. The grid is read-only and I am trying to set the session variable every time a row is selected. (I have an action button for uploading files in a linked grid that needs this value)

                          Code:
                          session.clitdaent_id = {grid.Object}.getValue('G','ITEM_ID',{Grid.RowNumber});
                          It does not seem to set the session variable.

                            Session variables run on the server and not in your browser. If you want to set one the easiest way is to do an ajax callback and set the session variable using xBasic.
