Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Demographic report counts

    I have a table of clients with demographic information (sex, race, ethnicity, marital status, age, primary language), and now I need to create a report that totals the number of clients for each of the values in each of those fields.
    so lets say i want to look at marital status, sex, and primary Language.

    Marital status options are

    And language options are based off a table that can be updated.

    what i want to do is create a report that has the total of all the different demographic fields involved, so i want it to look like this

    Marital Status Totals
    Single 213
    Married 466
    Divorced 2431

    Primary Language totals
    English 3462
    Spanish 2311

    Gender Totals
    Male 5422
    Female 5454

    I tried using groups and sub-reports with groups and it always combines the groups into embedded sub-groups so i get something like this. (I also tried using cross-tab and summary operations and they end up the same way)

    Single 50
    Male 25
    Female 25
    Divorced 75
    Male 50
    Female 25
    Married 100
    Male 54
    Female 46

    I could manually create a calculated field for each viable field value for each of the 6 fields, but that would be... a nightmare. Is there any way to do what i'm describing? Thanks!

    Re: Demographic report counts

    I would use something like this. It has a calculated field for each "watch" type, and just adds 1 when true, and 0 when not, thus giving you the totals. Depending on how the rest of your report is set up, you may need to modify the groupings (e.g., GRP->GRAND,GRP->DETAIL).

    Marital Status Totals
    Single 213 -- total(iif(martial_status="Single",1,0),grp->detail)
    Married 466 -- total(iif(martial_status="Married",1,0),grp->detail)
    Divorced 2431 -- total(iif(martial_status="Divorced",1,0),grp->detail)

    Primary Language totals
    English 3462 -- total(iif(prim_lang="English",1,0),grp->detail)
    Spanish 2311 -- total(iif(prim_lang="Spanish",1,0),grp->detail)

    Gender Totals
    Male 5422 -- total(iif(gender="Male",1,0),grp->detail)
    Female 5454 -- total(iif(gender="Female",1,0),grp->detail)

      Re: Demographic report counts

      Thanks for your reply stephen! that kind of structure would work if the groupings were static (like on an aging report), but i want the users to be able to add/remove languages, for example, without having to add new calculated fields. I'm not sure if this is possible with alpha tools, I may have to do some pre-processing for the report.

        Sounds like you need a crosstab.
        I have never enjoyed using this in A5, and tend to switch to excel's equiv, pivot table.

          Re: Demographic report counts

          I did try using a cross tab operation, but found that it works the same way groups do in reports; they embed groups within each other. I may be wrong but I don't think cross-tabs will work either. Thanks for the suggestion though!
