Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Issue: "Row Expander" vs "Linked Grids/Content"

Issue: "Row Expander" vs "Linked Grids/Content"

Has anyone else run into this issue?

A Linked Grid definition works fine when defined with the "Row Expander" properties section of a grid. But the same Linked Grid definition does not work when entered in the same grid's "Linked Grids/Content" properties section.

The Linked Grid is identical in both sections and the Parent/Child links are identical.

The error is: 'id' is null or not an object.

See attached pic for a clearer (hopefully) explanation of my issue.

Sounds like the issue I was having. I solved mine by changing from a linked grid to a row expander linked grid. Although I am not certain I think my error was caused by my linking fields having null values. I wish I knew where to find the lines of code that the error indicates.

I am having the same problem. I am still able to use the linked grids even with the error message at the lower left hand side of the browser screen, but I'd love to know why this is happening.

Yes. I assume that you want "both" grids at the same time. If so, create a calc field such as: table_id = id. Add that calc field to your grid and link the 2nd instance of the grid using the calc field.

Are you able to edit the fields of the parent table who's child is causing the error? I was not able to make the fields 'dirty' to submit changes.

I guess if you look at the error in the first image it does indicate the problem, at least in my case 'null id' my key field is a sql unique identifier which is null until I insert a record and it is refreshed. So there is not much I can do about that issue. Alpha does not handle null values very well as I am discovering with null numeric values.

Thank you Peter, I will give that a try. Although this problem helped me to discover this feature I had not used before, Row Expander Grid Linker, which I actually like better. Why have a grid displayed with 'No Records in Query'? Just make it unavailable as is the case when using the row expander grid linking. Works better for me.

I just tried to take a customers_readonly grid using Northwinds as my sample database, and create a row expander and a linked grid using orders_readonly grid linked by the CustomerID on both of them and it worked perfectly. Is there something else that might be causing your issue? Running in to problems between using DBF and SQL (or in this case Access)?

The linking to a single table works fine. My problem occurs when I have a linked table(grid) that has a linked table(grid) and the first linked table(grid) has no matching records in the query.

I think now after examining the error that it has to do with using linking fields that have null values. I have not come up with a solution yet null values are pretty much a fact of life with sql. I am trying to understand Peters idea.

I thought that the the problem was solved with the row expander linking grid and it works now without an error when I just change records. When I insert a new record into the parent table I get the error still.

I am trying to use either "Linked Grids/Content" or a "Row Expander" with a MS Access data source with Primary Key "ID" of type numeric, but I never get any data in the "Linked Grids/Content" or a "Row Expander".
Is there a secret step required when using MS Access? I have done this with dbf data with no problem.

Is there a special extra step required when using MS Access? I have done this with dbf data with no problem.
