Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

OK OK I'm ready to learn how to build Web Applications

    I Think,

Keep in mind I fought tooth and nail against developing Apps for Windows for years. I just got back into the saddle after major open heart surgery 6 weeks ago. Like it or not I realize I have to start thinking about Web Applications (Windows all over again) and building web apps.

What is the best way to learn how to begin developing web apps. I've always built desktop apps for many years.

    Hi Fred,

The best place to start is to post your questions in the Application Server section of this forum.

      Thanks Keith

No matter how hard I tell myself that I don't really need to develop web applications (I really do) I have had 3 clients in the past month ask for me to port my desktop apps I've built to a web based solution. I was in hopes that Alpha had a pill that I could take and instantly have the knowledge needed. Oh Well! I'll just have to learn it the regular way.

        Hi Fred,

Give the Videos a try, http://news.alphasoftware.com/V10Preview/videos.htm may take a little of the sting out of the process.

They don't have a pill, but they have a new service pack that you can purchase that will "convert" all your tables into grids and plug then into a tabbed_ui interface (read: menu). There really is a lot to learn, but that might make it easier for you. It's called the "Flying Start Genie". Just realize that it will provide you with a "start", but doesn't automatically plug in security, etc.

                Ken,
The two links you have at the bottom of your post

                http://www.ajaxvideotutorials.com/vi...ibrary/webcm1/
                http://www.ajaxvideotutorials.com/vi...ibrary/webcm2/

sound very interesting, but they don't seem to work.
No error is given the screen is just blank.

Is special software or access rights needed?
I'm running AF V10 (not the new candidate) on Windows 7.

I got the links from Ken's post # 7 above. I still get nothing when I click on them. I tried downloading them and got a couple of blank html pages. :(

                      The videos are also here.

Although videos are "old" they show the basic concept how to put things together.

(I must say I also have had troubles with these links also)

Thanks Ken. This link worked and so did at least one (which is all that I had time to view) of the videos worked.

I have to say that the help and tutorials that are available for AlphaFive are numerous, but so incredibly NOT organized or centralized. It is so confusing and difficcult to remember where they all are.

Thanks for your (and everybody else's) help.

Yeah, their web site is a mish-mosh of different versions and odd crooked links that's so confused that even the gods of Alpha can't figure it out. It's a MESS! Definitely a job for Dr. Martin Heller! He can fix it if anyone can.
