Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    you will need to ask microsoft to change how Internet Explorer works. Alpha has no control over the built-in behavior of the browser.

      It would be great if Alpha developed a browser. Think of the enhanced functionality connecting to the alpha server. Just make it so the disabled text color can be changed. I would pay for that.

        It would be great if alpha reinvented algebra, you would just use a genie to get a result. ;)

          Has anyone had luck showing a column that is initially hidden? I can hide and show a column that is initially visible. But I can't show a column whose property starts hidden.

            if you set a grid column's 'hidden' property to .t. then that column is not rendered as part of the initial html that is sent to the browser. so therefore it would be impossible for the client-side javascript to later on show it - because there is nothing to show - it is simply not there.

            if you want a column to be hidden initially, but to be showable later on, then setting it's 'hidden' property to .t. is the wrong way to do this. You need to make sure that the hidden property is NOT checked. then define a show/hide expression that returns false when the grid is initially rendered.

            The 'hidden' property is intended for use when you use free-form html layouts on one or more grid columns.
            say you have 3 grid fields: firstname, lastname, and company.
            you might hide firstname and lastname, then make company a freeform layout and put the placeholders for firstname and lastname (the two hidden fields) in the freeform layout that you define for the company field.

              Just an outsider's take on this...
              if you set a grid column's 'hidden' property to .t. then that column is not rendered as part of the initial html that is sent to the browser. so therefore it would be impossible for the client-side javascript to later on show it - because there is nothing to show - it is simply not there.
              Sounds like the use of the term "Hidden" then is a misnomer. To me hidden implies presence when apparently, in this scenario, it means it is not.

              But a great explanation of what is actually happening which is of more importance perhaps than the confusion it created initially! :)

                Enable expression and Show/Hide expression

                I'm not having any luck using this show/hide expression on a detail view.

                I have a field cliID that is included in the field list, and its show/hide expression is set to 1=0. So - it appears in the source view for the page, but is hidden from the user.

                i have a button in the field list that I want to appear if the cliID is not Zero, and not appear if the cliId is Zero

                I'm using the following enable expression:

                not cliID = 0

                If I save the grid, I get a script error:

                'this._newDVValues' is null or not an object
                file:///C:/Document%20and%20Settings/earl/Local%20Settings/Temp/temp.html

                Can anyone point me in the right direction here?

                Thanks,

                Robert

                  Re: Session variable and Show/Hide expression

                  An update to my post.

                  cliID is an autoid field - basically on the Detail view, i'm trying to hide the button if I'm on a new record.

                  I can't use the data.rowNumber in my expression, as when i'm in a detail view ADDING the first new record to an empty table, the value of the rownumber is coming back as 1 the same as if i'm in edit on the first row of the table.

                  Thanks,

                  Robert

                    Re: Session variable and Show/Hide expression

                    In the button Show/Hide:

                    Code:
                    cliID > 0
                    This has worked for me in similar setups.

                      here is how you can hide a button in the detail view if you are on a new record.

                      1. go to javascript function declarations and define this function

                      function dvr() {
                      return {grid.object}._detailViewRow;
                      }

                      2. then define this for the show/hide expression

                      dvr() > 0

                      here is how this works.

                      1. _detailViewRow is a property of the Grid object. It is set to -1 when the detail view is showing a new record.

                      2. then function dvr() therefore returns -1 when you are on a new detail view row and > 0 when you are on an existing record detail view row.

                      3. the client side show/hide expressions can call any javascript functions that you define - this is an often overlooked, but extremely powerful feature of all of the client side functionality in the grid.
